1978 Nathan’s Memorial Day hot dog eating contest

In the 1970s, Nathan’s held Coney Island hot dog eating contests throughout the summer. Here is the account of the 1978 Memorial Day contest from the Google News Archive. (note the 1917 contest origin year).

    2 kids downing 10 hot dogs each in 6.5 minutes. The low ranked old timer would be no match for these young eating studs. 11 HDBs wouldn’t be good enough in 1978 either.

    Sinclair competed in the 2003 civil service contest at age 35 and became a police officer with the NYPD

    I met Sinclair at the contest he was there with his mom and an entourage along with the news clip from 1978 . I think he ate less hot dogs at the civil service contest than he did in 1978 . Overall good guy
