Blog androcide (How to block out male eaters)

In the comments, the observation has been made that this blog has diverged from its intended subject of females with healthy appetites. That observation is generally correct. There has not been a plethora of news about trencherwomen recently with Carlene Lefevre’s post-hospitalization hiatus and the 8 week gap between Sonya Thomas’ events. Any contribution of links or other material is appreciated.

If you do not want wish to view the entries about male competitive eaters the URL http://trencherwomen.com/category/people/ will block them out. (http://trencherwomen.com/category/trenchermen/ will prevent posts about gurgatrices from being seen.)

Cookie Jarvis interview / SF wings preview

The San Jose Mercury has an interview about Cookie Jarvis in conjunction with the Verizon Voice Wing chicken wing contest to be held Saturday. The contest will be held at the Hyatt at Fisherman’s Wharf, which seems a more apt location for a seafood eating contest.

2004 NC sweet potato flashback

This forum thread describes Mara Thomas’ efforts to compete in the 2004 Sweet Potato Casserole contest held at the NC State Fair. (Based on the comments in the thread, she is apparently an eater of considerable abilities). She wound up having to miss the contest because it was held during working hours. If she enters the 2005 grilled cheese contest held at the same site she will not have to face Sonya Thomas who won the previous year’s event.

Cookie Jarvis wins Arkansas grilled cheese

The AP has an article (at abcnews.com) about the goldenpalace.com grilled cheese qualifier held Saturday at the Arkansas State Fair. The results of that contest are:

1. Cookie Jarvis, Long Island, NY, 19 sandwiches
2. Pat Philbin, Moonachie, NJ, 17.5 sandwiches
3. Michael Finnell, Sherwood, AR, 11.5 sandwiches (after 1 minute overtime to decide 3rd)
4. Christopher Tarleton, Corpus Christi, TX 10 sandwiches (lost overtime to Finnell)

With 4 qualifiers left, notable eaters who have yet to qualify include Joey Chestnut and Badlands Booker. (Hopefully Carlene LeFevre will recover in time to participate in the Phoenix contest) If Joey Chestnut competes in the Southern California Fair contest to be held Monday, it will be interesting to see if he challenges Tim Janus’ record of 31. (It has been rumored that Kobayashi will appear at the Southern California contest) The article mentions that there will be a finals contest at an undetermined date and time to determine the allocation of the $20,000.

Updated 10/9 3:55 pm The Arkansas Democrat Gazette has an article mentioning the contest.

Larger Text SI on Campus article uploaded

The screen capture of the Sports Illustrated on Campus article about collegiate eaters uploaded previously is difficult to read, so I did another screen capture with larger text (and no picture) and uploaded it here.

The article mentions that Joey Chestnut found it difficult to do the Chattanooga Krystal qualifier after having competed the previous day, but does not state that the eater he lost to in that contest had done contests the preceding two days.

(Updated 10/5 12:33 am #6 finisher Ken Wong has provided me with a listing of the remaining finishers)

#6 – Ken “The Demolisher” Wong, about 2.29 lb. surrey.bc.ca unranked
#7 to 11 – Scott”Pork Slayer” Sayer, ?.?? lb., Albany,OR IFOCE Rank #44
#7 to 11 – Brian McDonald, about 1.05 lb. Everett, WA, unranked
NOTE: Brian McDonald was the top local eater from Washington unranked

No Sport Illustrated (on Campus) jinx for Joey Chestnut as he continues the momentum he established in August and Labor Day weekend, easily beating “Badlands” Booker, who is unable to upset a top 3 eater in chicken wings for the second time in a month. All three (and the next two places) qualify for the finals in Boston next month.
