While many fast food restaurants are promoting the healthiness of some of their menu items, the Heart Attack Grill in Arizona has gone in the opposite direction and calls its main offering “bypass burgers”. Those sandwiches can have up to two pounds of meat. The restaurant’s main gimmick is having its waitresses wear nurse outfits. The Arizona Board of Nurses has threatened a lawsuit against the restaurant. The restaurant has an extensive Wikipedia entry which is under threat of deletion
The grill does not have an eat it quickly and get it for free challenge, but it does have an Alpha Male Monday, in which a member of a party of four or more can get a free meal. There is a “Hall of Fame” on the restaurant website.
The Heart Attack Grill has a proto-blog which records happenings at the restaurant. In the June 2006 archives, the grill laid down a challenge to the IFOCE:
In fact, I still issue an open challenge to Kobayashi, The Black Widow (An “Honorary Guy” in anyone’s book), Joey Chestnut and the rest of those hotdog eating wussies at the IFOCE. Simrin is our King and there’s no questioning his superiority for the simple reason that he’s the world’s only competitive eating artist who works with the MANLY MEDIUM of the Quadruple Bypass Burger. The rest of the other sissies eat little wimpy hot dogs.

(from AICE news) “Gentleman” Joe Menchetti won the AICE bun & cheese eating contest by eating 8 bun & cheese sandwiches in 2:15 in Mount Vernon, NY. Ian “the Invader” Hickman was second and “King” George van Laar was 3rd.
Hoboken NJ, Italian Ice eating contest – won by Kristine Ducusin
Bethlehem, PA haggis eating contest – perhaps steakbellie can receive permission to compete in next year’s contest
Portland, OR team donut eating contest held in conjunction with Portland Carfree Days. (This is surprising since environmentalists are usually opposed to competitive eating)

A midwestern theme park has received a lot of publicity recently for having a cockroach eating contest. I am not going to name the park or provide a link to the article because I think that grotesque eating contests, which are a segment in the show “Fear Factor”, makes competitive eating look like a circus side show and I do not want to see a “race to the bottom” in which contests keep offering more and more repulsive items. The new poll asks if you share that opinion.

4:39 The official count is Simpson 53, Janus 52.5 Chip lead throughout the contest, but Eater X had an impressive last minute rally. Tim Janus is almost certainly guaranteed a wildcard spot
9:53 Full results are available at krystalsquareoff.com Justin Mih continued a string of impressive performances with 33. I assume the “mystery eater” from the Waffle House contest did not show up.
(Thanks Brian Cooley) 11:01 Chip Simpson makes the front page of ajc.com, which has an article that requires registration or bugmenot.com

Marketwire reports that Kobayashi defeated a team of four Bostonian amateurs in a lobster roll eating contest by eating 41 lobster rolls in 10 minutes. Marketwire says the quartet combined for 25 rolls; IFOCE says their total was 28. None of the amateurs are named, but I think one of them was Molly Zalcarian, who competed in the St. Patrick’s Day corned beef contest.
A video of the contest can be viewed at: http://www.covermaxcomm.com/lobster/

Happy Rosh Hashanah to the Jewish readers of this site. This article from 2004 from the Jewish Week says that a quarter of the top 24 eaters were Jewish at that time, but I think a lot of those eaters have either retired or dropped down since then. Don “Moses” Lerman is the featured eater in that article.

Erik “the Red” Denmark announces that he will attempt to break the IFOCE record of 4 lb. 9 oz. of spot shrimp in 12 minutes tomorrow. The record is currently held by “Hungry” Charles Hardy. The attempt will be part of a charity event and broadcast on internet radio around 7:30 eastern / 4:30 pacific.
Crazy Legs Conti claims to have done 5 pounds in 10 minutes:
Q Do you have a favorite eating contest? Hot dogs? Ice cream?
A I turned pro on Acme Louisiana Oysters (20 dozen in ten minutes) and earned the moniker, “The Mollusk King”. I’ve done well in Alaskan Spot Shrimp (5 lbs in ten minutes). I am training for Delaware Crab Cakes, so seafood is my specialty. My father weaned me on seafood, calling it, “low tide food – nothing that grows above the ankle”. Favorite Eating Contest? Lobster, Lobstah, and Ayuh, Lobsta.
