According to this article in metropolis Japan, today (April 24) is the 5th anniversary of the death of a 14-year-old Japanese boy who choked on a piece of bread after challenging two classmates to an eating contest. The death resulted in the cancellation of Food Battle Club and a three year hiatus for all televised eating contests. It is interesting that the press conference announcing the formation of Gyaruru is the same day as that tragic event.

From jinryuichi-hnph
In an event and press announcement in Tsuchiura – Tsuji Nozomi, Gyaru Sone and Tokito Ami will team up in a new Unit “Gyaruru”. It’s a ganguro fashion-based Para-Para gyaru unit, a trend that is popular in places like Shibuya, Tokyo. They each get a nickname for themselves – ‘Tsujiji’, ‘Amimi’ and ‘Sonene’. I think you can guess who is who.
Surprise #1[EDIT]: Guess what? Gyaruru will be releasing a new single produced by Tsunku, and fashion coordination will be handled by one Gyaru manager/entrepreneur – Fujita Miho of G-Revo. The single is called “Boom Boom Mecha Macho” c/w “Onna no urutora”, and will be released under TNX on 20th June this year.
The magazine spread in the previous blog entry was to promote the group. The upcoming single has a promotional page
Tsuji Nozomi is a former member of Morning Musume, which had the eating “contest” with Nobuyuki Shirota in their Christmas special.
Other sites: Hello Online, someboys, japtard
update: JPopMusic has a 14 page forum thread about the group. A live version of the single is available.
updated #2 A video clip about the press conference from a morning news show is also available

The Guardian, a British newspaper, has an article on the planned redevelopment of Coney Island:
Coney Island may be something of a time capsule – as well as the perfect milieu for a Scooby Doo villain – but it holds its ground in terms of modern thrills – the Cyclone is as terrifying a white-knuckle ride as you’ll find anywhere, and well worth an hour’s ride on the F train from midtown Manhattan.
The summer season has a non-stop carnival atmosphere, with a fancy dress Mermaid Parade on 23 June and Nathan’s Famous hot dog-eating competition on 4 July. Aged eccentrics promenade the boardwalk next to Brooklyn homeboys, Williamsburg hipsters and young families. All human life is here, out for the day, an afternoon at the Aquarium or the Circus Sideshow, or at least a drink at the adjoining Freak

A friend of Dale Boone received a restaurant recommendation from him:
Before heading back to Delhi, we spent a day in Chennai. Here, we visited Chennai’s only All-American diner called “Sparkys”. This place was recommended to me by my competitive-eater friend Dale Boone, who’s a top-ranking member of the International Federation of Competitive Eating. Dale spends half the year in Chennai making movies and the other half in the States competing in competitions like NYC’s “Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Competition”. He’s a regular at Sparkys because it has an all-you-can-eat buffet on weekends.
If Dale Boone makes an annual trip to India, perhaps he is back in India now which would explain his absence from the Broadway at the Beach contest yesterday.
Chennai was formerly named Madras.

If no new contests in May or June are added to the IFOCE schedule, then it will be over 6 months between IFOCE contests in the northeastern (or midwestern) United States which are open to all IFOCE members and offer cash prizes. The most recent contest meeting those criteria was the Chock Full O Nuts date nut bread contest at Madison Square Garden on December 20, 2006 and the next contest is apparently the Shoo Fly Pie eating contest on June 23. It will be almost 5 months (until the May 19 Hartford Nathan’s qualfier) between any open northeastern contests.

The UEPa cheesesteak tour will start at Jim’s Steaks, where Lynda Kuerth broke the challenge record twice in 1977. She also won a bunless hot dog eating contest in Philadelphia that year. Google news search has recently added searching scanned newspaper archives, which has made it possible to try to piece together Ms. Kuerth’s eating contest history. Some contest results from that archive are below:
1975 winner Olivet College (MI) banana split eating contest (amount unknown)
1976 winner Olivet College (MI) banana split eating contest (15 banana splits)
1977 winner Olivet College (MI) banana split eating contest (13 banana splits)
1978 winner Polock Johnny’s Polish sausage eating contest (Baltimore) 19 Polish sausages

EATORF.com has opened. They also have a cafepress merchandise page like the UEPa. The home page gives their mission statement:
E.A.T.O.R.F. is here to introduce and celebrate competitive eating on a consistent basis to the good people of NEPA. As one of the fastest growing sports in America, competitive eating offers the average character with a supernatural eating capacity and speed with which he or she eats a chance to shine and show off his or her skills in a way the typical family dinner frowns upon. If you’re one of the gifted then we have a special place for you where you’ll be honored, cheered for, and appreciated. And, if you’re one of the best, you’ll be rewarded with some cash and prizes, too!

San Diego CityBeat has an article about the weekly eating contests held at the Tower Bar:
“The thing you have to remember,” says one contestant as he stacks his sandwiches on top of one another, “is it’s 90-percent mental.”
“You’ve gotta expand your diaphragm,” says his friend next to him, patting his extended belly. “I like to take the horizontal approach. You know, like Donald Duck eating corn. Oh, and my secret is to chew and wash it back with Guinness… and you can’t look at anyone else. You have to have the eye of the tiger.”
“Go!” yells the bartender, and the sandwiches begin to disappear. There are various techniques—some eat around the edges first; others use the typewriter approach—but the ones who fare best are those who smash their stack of sandwiches into one revolting ball of peanut butter, banana and bread. Within minutes, there’s a winner who signifies his victory by downing a shot of whiskey, standing up on a barstool, holding his hands above his head, hollering and bouncing around like Rocky after he ran up the stairs.
“There’s some guys I don’t stand a chance against,” says the winner later, after settling down from his elation. But the six-time champion eater known as LFA (short for El Jefe, or The Boss) says he isn’t talking about a stereotypical fat guy. Surprisingly fit himself, LFA says it’s usually the skinny guy with skills who takes home the $30 bar tab, the Eating Competition’s coveted prize.
