Competitive eating themed play to open

InsideBayArea.com describes the plot of “Deep Fried Cheese”, a new play to open in San Francisco next month:

Ingersoll-Thorp wrote the play, a comedy about relationships and competitive eating, and also directs it. Kalish stars as a guy whose penchant for entering eating contests doesn’t sit all that well with his girlfriend, who is going vegan.

“I think Tore wrote this play to torture me,” Kalish says. “I eat a bunch of hot dogs really fast, and spaghetti. I also catch Vienna sausages in my mouth and spray Cheez Whiz into my mouth. I wrap an Oreo in salami. It’s pretty intense. Eating hot dogs fast is disgusting.”

But Kalish is quick to point out that amid the spectacle of all this eating is a romantic comedy with a “strong emotional center.”

Gal Sone moves out & other videos

Gal Sone recently moved out of her parent’s house in Kyoto into a studio apartment in the Shibuya district of Tokyo. A program called “Imada Housing Moving” located Gal Sone a new residence and then performed some renovations on it, greatly upgrading the kitchenette and adding a built in aquarium and condiment dispenser. The apartment has 29.6 square meters (330 square feet) and has a monthly rent of 116000 Yen ($957). The apartment is too small for both a bed and sofa, so Gal Sone will sleep on a futon.

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

R Suzuki has a summary of the program

Sonya marks a decade in competitive eating

New on SonyaTheBlackWidow.com

Sonya, before you became a competitive eater, did you ever do an eating challenge?

- Response: I guess I sort of did. Way back in the summer of 1997, when I first came to the US from my home country of South Korea, my brand new American friends and I went to the Trail Dust Streak House in Dallas, Texas. Being only a little bigger than I am now (then about 108 lbs), my friends could not believe it when I took them up on their dare and ate the Trail Dust’s (then) featured 52-oz T-Bone Steak with a Baked Potato and a large Milk Shake. I was not close to being full when I finished, and I honestly didn’t understand the reason for my friends’ state of shock. I just thought that they had poor appetites.

A 50 ounce steak (called the “Bull Shipper”) is still on the Trail Dust’s menu, but there does not appear to be any online “Wall of Fame” on the restaurant website.

More fantasy competitive eating coverage

Liz’s fantasy league receives another mention in the Worcester, MA Telegram:

Not only did I receive praise from Liz Kellermeyer, the creator of the fantasy eating league located at groups.google.com/group/fantasyeating, who called my column “a lot of fun,” but I even had my own brush with an actual athlete.

Yes, Super Paul Bonebreaker BigMouth Barlow, a man of many names and a giant appetite, who is ranked 40th in the world by the International Federation of Competitive Eating.

Barlow also wrote to express his enjoyment of the article and said that one of the highlights of his life was becoming a fantasy league subject.

See, we have to help these unheralded heroes fulfill their life dreams by making them fantasy stars.
