From Beautiful Brian’s bits & pieces:
It has been brought to my attention that certain IFOCE members more than likely pertaining to the the top 25 have been sent emails regarding their availabilty for an upcoming SPIKE tv special in Las Vegas which would span the course of 3 or 4 days during the early part of Oct.You would need to take a week off from work. Sponsors will cover your airfare and hotel expenses along with $1000 spending money. Sounds like U.S open all over again, but this time with no mention of lottery picks

Liz has posted a long interview with Crazy Legs Conti following his victory in the Saratoga qualifier to truefan:
I genuinely feel bad that Mike Landrich didn’t make it. I’ve never met him, I don’t know what he put up in Vegas, but if it’s any consolation to him, I didn’t get an email confirmation either. There is no grand IFOCE conspiracy afloat, I saw an event I wanted to go to so I picked up the phone and found out the info and showed up. In high school it took six calls before I got a girl to agree, but I made it to the prom. I arrived at Saratoga to learn that instead of the usual seventy people, only seven preregistered for the contest.

The Sault Star reports that Keith Knight died Wednesday night from brain cancer at 51:
Knight is perhaps best known for his role as Larry Finklestein, a counsellor-in-training in Meatballs, the 1979 Canadian comedy that marked his feature film debut and cast Saturday Night Live alum Bill Murray in his first starring role.
…
Meatballs, budgeted at $1.6 million and shot in Haliburton, earned more than $25 million in the first six weeks of its release, making it at the time the top-grossing Canadian film of all time.
Knight, who ate more than 100 hot dogs during filming of a hot-dog-eating contest, described Meatballs as “American Graffiti goes to camp.”

WebMD has an article about the health impact of competitive eating. Joey Chestnut, Hall Hunt and Dr. David Metz are quoted.
If competitors are vomiting regularly, that could cause problems, Sitaraman says. Protracted vomiting can increase the chances of aspiration, or food getting into the lungs rather than the esophagus. This can lead to deadly pneumonia. But competitive eaters say vomiting at competitions is rare.
Sitaraman was surprised when, doing a search of the medical literature of the past several years, she found no reported complications from competitive eating, short of a single case of a jaw fracture. “Maybe [competitive eaters'] gastrointestinal tract has adapted and acclimatized to eat those calories,” she speculates.
