Post Contest Coverage

A brief recap of the Sonya Thomas vs. Miki Sudo rivalry:

  • From her IFOCE / MLE debut in June 2013 to April 2013, Sonya thomas maintained a winning streak against other female competiitve eaters for 118 months.
  • After success in local Las Vegas eating contests and challenges, Miki Sudo debuted in Major League Eating at the 2013 Las Vegas qualifier. Her total of 40 hot dogs was the best ever for a Nathan’s debut in a 10 minute contest (and best overall since Kobayashi’s first USA contest in 2001)
  • About a week before the 2013 Nathan’s finals, it is announced Miki Sudo will not compete. A Las Vegas Weekly interview from last month has more on her withdrawal.
  • With Miki Sudo not competing in the 2013 women’s Nathan’s finals, Sonya Thomas wins the female competition for the third year in a row (and maintains an 11 year streak where she is the top performing woman on July 4).
  • In subsequent contests, Miki Sudo would have success against Sonya Thomas, starting a winning streak which is currently at 8 competitions.
  • In December 2013, Miki Sudo (#4) would be ranked ahead of Sonya Thomas (#5), ending a decade where she was the top woman in the IFOCE/MLE rankings
  • Last month, Miki Sudo qualified for the Nathan’s finals. Her total of 40 hot dogs matched her amount from last year and made her the only woman to hit 40+ in the past 23 months. She is currently in New York City and will try to surpass that amount.
  • According to MJP, Miki Sudo has gone from being an +120 underdog to a -150 favorite in online sports casinos.

Cant wait to read the contest preview from someone that cant eat more than 4 hot dogs and buns and spent a fortune traveling from Chicago to NY just to rub elbows with Chestnut and Sonya . Reminds me of Fantasy Baseball camp if that still exists

“From her IFOCE / MLE debut in June 20013 to April 2013, Sonya thomas ”

Is this correct? Maybe it’s a typo? Did she debut is 2003? I wasn’t following competitive eating then.

Whats up with the relatively low totals? Thought both might be able to eclipse 40.

Aside from Lesco Sonya Larell and Juliet kids from the neat eating contest would have been much better competition in the womans contest. If you excuse me i need a hot dog

34?? There has to be weather issues or something. It will be interesting to see if the men can break 60 if the same conditions exist. I was expecting to read over 40 for sure. Congrats to all 3!

It must have been very hot and humid for tge total to have been so low.

“Aside from Lesco Sonya Larell and Juliet ”

    You are also forgetting Meredith.

The official totals are still not out, and it’s been an hour since the contest has ended. This is why MLE is not a professional organization.

Ah…I don’t know much about competive eating. Had no idea that there were contractual reasons that some people compete in certain events and not in others. Too bad.

I think the dejected look on Sudo face on the Today show and even on stage was the fact that Seiken doesnt bother with her anymore

Some of these selfish eaters should share some of their winnings with the underprivileged eaters and the unfortunate Janus gives away his trophies is a kind gesture but in another sense its like dissing Nathans by implying i have no need for this shit

Sonya is a really tough competitor. It is disappointing that she didn’t finish closer to Miki or beat her though I guess not totally surprising. Sonya has had a long career and maybe she is getting a bit tired of putting her body and her life through these contests. Miki is just starting and is fantastic. But no single person can be the top competitive eater without their supporting cast of eaters. Even the eaters who come in last are important to the overall contests.

Though I expect the great Sonya Thomas to have a very rewarding year, I see a very long year for newcomer Miki Sudo, and for any sponsor who hitches their trailer to her wagon of damaged goods.

Notice she took the money and ran out of NYC pretty fast before the media caught on to her past . Smart move

It is sad that so many belittle Mikis achievement. Suggesting that Sonya didn’t try or got tired of winning is farcical. Results from the past year clearly show who the better eater was. It’s more a matter of stronger talent rising high, which is only to be expected as more people play the game. Sonya Thomas is a legend. Her legendary status paved the way for new eaters like Miki. I salute them both.

I think its great we have a site like eatfeats so we can voice our opinions whether they are negative or positive. In the case of someone like Sudo i woud not look at her say hello to her .As far as im concerned she doesn’t exist .Enjoy your money

It is entirely possible that Sonya’s heart just was not in it or she may just be giving this woman enough rope to hang herself.

I agree with 11:40 AM above, this is a great site. This is the first or second site I go to each day. I was glued to this site yesterday, the biggest CE day of the year. My only wishes are that we could start our own threads, like on a message board, and that our posts here would not be moderated, which can take some time to get posted. You used to be able to post here and not be moderated if you had your own user account.

My first post on a message board would be “how many competitive eaters have you personally met?” I wonder if anyone has met them all?

I got a great idea Gourmand how bout a competitive eating bootcamp where all of us can get together out in the woods somewhere and sit by a campfire roasting hot dogs and marshmallosws while we sit and reminsice about old bedtales and sing lullabies to one another . Of course whoeever runs this camp is going to charge $1500 a head to have the priveledge of rubbing elbows with Miki Sudo and Joey Chestnut . Hey someone has to make a buck or two from this right?

More money? Just like every other sports organization, from boxing to chess to pro football posts their results.

They have similar events in many sports, like pro baseball or football. Like fantasy camp for baseball or VIP fan events in football.
