If runner-ups Tim Janus & Aaron Osthoff split the original 2nd and 3rd place amounts after tying, they would have received $1125 each.

4:56 8 people beat Tim Janus’ winning total of 42 last year including (Kevin “LA Beast” Maria “Edible” (48) and “Cardboard Shell” (48)) despite the contest terminating after about 6 minutes due to a lack of cupcakes. This might be the first time an IFOCE record has almost been doubled since 2001 Nathan’s. Aaron Osthoff almost doubled his 2011 amount of 35.5 cupcakes. If the contest was the planned 8 minutes, Bertoletti probably would have doubled the 2011 winning total Tim Brown was reportedly present, but his result was not announced.

The Herald Sun reports that Tim Janus ate the most wontons, 310 in 8 minutes, at the pro exhibition at the Melbourne qualifier for the CP Biggest Eater. Joey Chestnut ate 297, 83 less than his record last year, and Juliet Lee ate 175 to break her female record of 160. Final results for the Australians competing have not been posted.

update The MLE facebook reports that Felix Ariga and Brad Stokes tied for 1st place in the contest for Australian males with a total of 105 wontons, less than the 109 Helen Tan ate to win the Singaporean women’s contest. Milly Chow was the best Australian female with a total of 75 wontons.

According to the eatfeats database, this is Tim’s first victory over Joey since the 2009 grits contest in Bossier City, LA. (All of Tim’s previous three victories over Joey Chestnut were in grits contests.) This is also Joey’s first loss in a contest for a food other than chicken wings in over a year. The MLE facebook announces that Pat Bertoletti, Tim Janus and Crazy Legs Conti will attempt to break the record for banana eating on tomorrow’s episode of Live with Regis & Kelly.

Regis Philbin had previous involvement with competitive eating before the debut of Live with Regis & Kelly. In 1963, he served as a referee for an eating contest between San Diego Charger defensive lineman / pro wrestler Ernie “Big Cat” Ladd and Nick Cordileone. Flickr has a picture of the program for the contest.

Pat Bertoletti will stay in New York City and compete in Thursday’s cannoli contest in an attempt to obtain his 36th record. Eric “Badlands” Booker and Maria “Edible” have also been announced as entrants.
