In a quest to bring family fun to the city, Rubio said firefighters are also planning two other events for the spring and summer months.

One will be a monster truck and dirt bike race. The other plan is to sponsor a Major League Eating challenge at Cal State San Bernardino.

The eating extravaganza will apparently include a cop versus firefighter donut eating contest as well as burrito and hot dog eating competitions.

1963 IHOP contest flashback

The San Bernardino Sun has a flashback from 43 years today ago about a pancake contest for college students sponsored by the International House of Pancakes. Teams from over 50 colleges participated, including a team from Tokyo. Two San Bernardino Valley College students, Bruce James and Susan Moncrief, won the contest by eating 270 pancakes in 30 minutes. A breakdown of the amount of pancakes eaten by James and Moncrief is not provided.

Ian Hickman wins California fried zucchini contest

Ian Hickman won the Farmer Boy’s Fried Zucchini contest held in Riverside, California on Saturday, his second consecutive victory. After taking Joe Menchetti’s current hiatus from AICE events into account, there does not appear to be any active eater on who can impede Hickman’s rise to the top of that organization.

Column by So Cal grilled cheese competitor

pe.com has a column (registration required) by someone who participated in last Monday’s grilled cheese contest at the Southern California Fair. He finished with 8 sandwiches, which he found rather unappetizing. There is also a video.

Jed Donahue wins Southern California grilled cheese qualifier

nctimes.com has an article about the grilled cheese qualifier held at the (inland) Southern California Fair at Lake Perris which was won by Jed Donahue with the impressive total of 20.5 sandwiches. The article focuses on Joe Camacho who ate 7 sandwiches. (2nd place, UC Irvine graduate student Justin Mih, did 14 and 3rd place (not named) did 13)
