Humble Bob breaks Krystal 2 minutes record
From KrystalSquareOff.com
Humble Bob Shoudt shattered the two-minute Krystal Square Off record by eating 39 Krystals.
The two-minute record was originally set at 21 Krystals by Matt Ward of Murfreesboro, TN in 2003. Ward’s record stood until July 2006, when Joey Chestnut ate 28. Chestnut’s mark was tied by Shoudt in Nashville last year.
GJoe competes in Krystal prequalifier
(From anonymous comment) KrystalSquareOff.com reports that “Gentleman” Joe Menchetti ate 24 burgers in 2 minutes in a Krystal prequalifier in Nashville, 4 off the record held by Joey Chestnut and Bob Shoudt. The article mentions Menchetti’s estrangement from the IFOCE, but does not say if he will be allowed to compete in the 8 minute qualifier on Sunday. GJoe is in Tennessee to compete in the Backyard Burgers finals tomorrow in Memphis.
Juris Shibayama profiled in DNJ.com
DNJ.com has an article about Juris “Dr. Big Time” Shibayama, who will compete in the Nashville Krystal qualifier.
Last year, he ate 33 burgers. On Sunday, the surgeon is shooting for 40 burgers in eight minutes.
The strategy, Shibayama says, is to chew as little as possible: “Big bites.”
His mother isn’t as excited about the new competitive hobby than his friends.
“She just doesn’t think it is very healthy,” Shibayama said. “Everyone else thinks its pretty cool though, and if I get on ESPN, they’re going to love it.”
Choking incident in Music City Bowl rib contest
(from independentmail.com) Clemson defensive tackle Elsmore Gabriel required the Heimlich maneuver after getting a bone lodged in his throat during a rib eating contest held at the Music City Bowl (Nashville, TN) team welcome party. Gabriel continued eating after the bone was removed and Clemson lost the contest to Kentucky by two ribs. William “Refrigerator” Perry, who appeared in the 2003 Nathan’s finals and a Kobayashi cartoon on Saturday Night Live, also played defensive tackle at Clemson.
