Looks like there will be more openings for qualifiers in this years Nathan’s contest. The following just came over the wires from the MLE newsletter.

Looks like May 17 and June 21 will be busy days for IFOCE with so many contests booked these two days.

Five Additional Chances to Qualify for the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

Major League Eating is pleased to announce the addition of five official qualifiers to the 2008 Nathan’s Famous International July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest Circuit. The events will occur in cities that have never before hosted a Nathan’s Famous Qualifier: Chicago and New Orleans (May 17), Pittsburgh (May 24), Kansas City (May 31) and Dallas (June 21).

Registration is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at 12:00PM Eastern Standard Time. Registration will occur only on the MLE network via http://www.majorleagueeating.com and http://www.ifoce.com, and additional information will soon appear on these sites. Like other Nathan’s Famous contests, registration is first come, first served. Standard Nathan’s Famous circuit rules will apply.

If you have confirmed your seat for one or more of the original twelve qualifiers and you want to give it up for one of the new contests, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can offer your spot to one of the many eaters on the waiting list. You must still register for the new qualifier and be one of the first 15 to do so.

If you registered for one of the original twelve contests and you received a STANDBY notification, these additional contests will be a great way to ensure that you get a chance to compete.

    Kevin,
Look on the brightside. This is still a great opportunity to be able to get into the finals. I think this is the most qualifiers they have ever had in one year! The original 13 + 1 Saratoga + Joey returning + 5 new qualifiers + ? overseas qualifiers = 20 contests before including the overseas qualifiers!
If I were one of the people ranked between about 11-30 I would be thinking this is my big chance to break into the Super Bowl of competitive eating.
Plus can’t you get to Las Vegas, Tempe, and San Fran pretty easily already. ;o) The closest one for me is about a 5.5 hour drive too.
Nathan’s is going to be a real party this year. Tons of contestants and it is on a Friday. I know where I will be all weekend!

Yeah, I know what you’re saying. It definitely will allow a lot more people to get into Nathan’s final this year, which is cool. I’d prefer it if there was additional wildcards added instead, so people didn’t have to worry so much about strategy and could just put up a good number wherever. But this is still a big improvement to allow more people to have the fun!
