Erik Denmark wins Fremont, CA Hooters qualifier

update May 31 Matt Stonie has a gallery

update May 29 results have been posted Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

update Dax “The Ginger” Swanson says he had a 43 wing deduction due to insufficient cleaning. This is strange for two reasons: 1) A contest judged by weight should not penalize by wing count 2) There should be no penalty for insufficient cleaning in a weight based contest; wings not fully cleaned should simply result in a lower total weight

The top 3 from this evening’s Hooter’s wing qualifier in Fremont, CA:
1) Erik Denmark 140 wings
2) Steve Hendry 106
3) Ken Douglas 100

That might be the last time Dax Ginger gets any kind of play on National Television

I had a 43 wing deduction Eric ate 3 more wings than I did, 140 to 143 I did not clean them enough.

What is written about the weight by OJ is certainly true so the whole thing is puzzling. In many ways It is not fair to ask Erik and Dax to explain because it is their organization and if someone has a problem with the judging, they should take it up with the organization or the referees. The decisions are always final so speculating on here doesn’t do much except lead to more speculation. That is what everyone is doing here for the most part anyway.

MLE does not subjectively deduct wings in a weighted contest. It’s not how many wings you “go through,” it’s all based on total weight eaten divided by an averaged weight per wing. So, the “deduction” was not a deduction at all. I don’t have to be there to know that.

while pondering’s point is valid, those of us slated to participate in upcoming hooters qualifiers do appreciate any insights into the judging, as far as if it is better to intricately clean 100 wings, or hastily down 140…

Do what you like, but it’s not hard to deduct what works best when wings are weighed.

Yeah Dax. You couldn’t have be “deducted wings” if the totals are supposed to be based off weight.
This whole thing is a cluster fuck. Good job MLE!

It does seem like they are judging by the seat of their pants at each qualifier… Weight really is king on wings, just like it should be with any debris food.

So how exactly is this contest judged, weaight or wings? Seems like after that first qualifying debacle where Grazy and A-train only ate 1lb they moved over to Wings.

But the bigger question is, why didn’t Joey compete in his own Home town?

I cleared 7 plates of 20 Eric cleared 7 plates and a few in to 8, i did not clean them well enough to make the weight in the top 3 the average of my 140 ended up being 94 with Eric at 140.

The so called mystery is solved and it is just like Rhonda said. MLE doesn’t take the time to post full results and things get reported here quickly, many misunderstandings result.

Based on the past, I believe they figure a wing is an ounce & you average eating half an ounce of meat per wing. Equals 32 wings eaten per pound. With that math, Eric ate 4lb 6 oz. & Dax ate 2 lb 15 oz. Since they count the actual wings to begin w/& then weigh them, you can be “deducted” wing. The general public doesn’t understand weight, meat eaten off the bone, etc. Numbers they get.

I knew I could not eat 140 wings if i did not touch a 140 wings.

So they are counting wings but then using the weight as the total based on the average of the number of wings eaten cleanly? *facepalm*

Just the opposite. How dense are you?

BigWillTheChamp, take a second to read GentlemanJoe’s post and understand it, its a pretty simple and logical concept. I have no idea how the MLE is handling this contest, but I would have to assume GJ’s theroy would be most believeable. The numbers are arbitrary, the results are probably done as any other wing contest out there, just in the end they convert the weight into “wings.”

‘counting’ and ‘wings eaten clean’ have nothing to do with the process of weighing. I’ll just leave it where it is…

For my 8th contest ever, and my first wing contest to have the hand speed to keep up with Eric is fine by me, true I could have slowed my speed down and cleaned the wings better a had a much better chance at 2nd 3rd, but I wanted to win.
