A commenter posted a link to an article reporting that Corinth [MS] Area Convention and Visitors Bureau tabled a request for $11275 to fund the 2016 Slugburger eating contest. The request will be reconsidered when Main Street Corinth Director Brent Johnson meets with the board. If $11,275 was the cost of the 2015 event, 26.6% of that amount was used for the $3000 purse. update LA Beast has posted screenshots (without links) of this post to facebook and twitter.

MLE charges the sponsor $10,000, plus prize purse, for a contest. all other incidental fees are paid by the sponsor, such as for employees to set up/clean up, food, supplies, equipment rental, etc.

Also, if Nela Signs that agreement, she won’t be able to Eat any food whatsoever in any media whatsoever for 3 years without MLE permission. She already has more exposure than eating one time in the Nathan’s contest. If I were her, I would sit down and seriously weigh out my options….that goes for any eater about to sign that BOGUS agreement. They WILL try and take LEGAL ACTION if you break the terms. BE WARNED!!

L.A. Beast, I’ll reserve judgement until you cite your examples to understand why how the MLE and the Shea Brothers have screwed anyone over. As I recall, this isn’t the first time you’ve said you were going to present evidence. As of now we have one post about how much money was raised for a single contest as well as its associated prize money along but no information about what kind of expenses are associated with putting on a contest. We also have hearsay about how much other contests have cost but I wouldn’t put too much stock in a source that is literally “anonymous”. I guess at the very least its interesting information but you can’t infer much beyond that. We may have different ideas as far as how businesses are run. MLE is not a charity or non-profit. Its a business so it shouldn’t be surprising to people that they are trying to turn a profit and because you do not have access to their books you really don’t have any idea where money goes and how it is invested. I don’t want to take sides but I get the impression that the main criticism is people expect prize money to eaters to be something like 90% of the cost to put on the contest. That would be nice but its not realistic and would result in far fewer contests because who would be motivated to do all the work to organize them. As far as the contract goes, how about don’t sign anything before reading it. I’ve read the contract and it works for me. It’s more fun traveling and competing in MLE events than traveling for low paying local contests or advertising what restaurant challenges I’ve won. As many have shown, you can successfully run a youtube channel on the side with no issues as well. I don’t fault people for having their own opinions but it would be easier for others to understand or relate to them if you could elaborate why you have those feelings.

Fair opinion Jam.Josh fair…As per where money goes (which is what the post is about), I will claim nothing. I suppose seeing this post sparked that flame that is still inside me from my issues with MLE 2 years back. I am double checking with my team to make sure what I share is ok legally. But like you said, as for now take everything I say as you must. When I was traveling and competing with MLE, I had the time of my life. The competitive eating community has become like a second family to me for sure. I’ve realized (unfortunately) first hand that MLE is indeed a business and not some family/fun loving/hobby type of game. It’s the real deal and I want to put the cards flat out on the table (with my experience-phone calls, threatening legal actions) to guide eaters in the future to make sure they make the best possible choices for themselves to avoid what I had to go through. That’s all I’m aiming to do

Give the MLE 3 more years and then it’ll be over. Outside the top 3 you have eaters who are perfectly fine with being mediocre (relative to matt and joey). #4 doesn’t even compete yet is able to ride to a comfortable third at Nathan’s LOL. The all star cast that gave MLE it’s flair (badlands, bertoletti, CLC, kobi, black widow, chestnut) are either not competing anymore or (hopefully) retiring in the future. Although, I will concede that there are some up and coming stars. I just don’t think they have the pizzazz so to speak. I think the Sheas can do a lot to further the organization and actually cause a huge following and increase audience and thus increase money for both themselves and the eaters. I really don’t think its greed. It’s laziness to actually branch the organization out. Why did the MLE get so big/publicity in the first place? Kobi!, who mind you fell in the Shea’s lap. Then the Kobi/Chestnut rivalry happened. That publicity wave is coming crashing down as you can see by the lack of televised events, and outside of the country events have been essentially retired. Really count how many events there are in a calendar year, minus the Nathan qualifiers. And the biggest slap in the face is that stupid MLE game app that is still advertised on the front page. That advertisement is the embodiment of an organization that is still holding onto the past.

Lets think about this for a second…

    $11,275 – Total Investment – $3,000 – Prize Money – (As OJ says – 26.6%).
This means a 73.4% profit for MLE.

Even assuming MLE makes the sponsor pay for EVERYTHING (including contest specific labor like EMTs), that doesn’t include the (presumed) cost of paying the emcee to the run the contest… the MLE office staff to coordinate the event… the MLE corporate expenses (rent, electricity, etc.) – They are a BUSINESS!

Not to mention the gross profit industry standard for things like publishing, TVs, and Audio equipments is around 75%. Should we compare MLE to this standard? No idea.

Would it be fantastic if the eaters made more? Yes. Would it be awesome if travel was covered? Sure. Would it be more beneficial if more places were paid out? Absolutely. But guys, this company employs people who are looking to make a living! The Sheas above all invested in the industry to make MONEY. It isn’t greed per say… its fucking capitalism! You American commenters are in the wrong country if you take serious issue with that.

Beast – you are one of the best things in the world of competitive eating right now – truly you are. The rudeness, threats, etc. that you (and many others) have called out MLE for… well (if true) thats shitty, uncalled for, and wrong. But c’mon – I can’t get behind being upset for a business trying to earn money. Especially when (Granted never seen the thing) there is a contract that is literally black and white of what the terms are.

I don’t know… the blind MLE rage really irks me.

A week later I was notified that I made the nathans qualifier no more waiting list. Then it was posted on eatfeats that I was gonna be a participant in the big contest. The next day I got a phone call (while I was napping) saying that I was booted from the qualifier. Thanks for waking me up to boot me out of your qualifier! Had they let me do the qualifier and I won I wouldve done Nathans on the 4th of July instead of the other big contest…… In the end it all worked out for the best. Stupid MLE !!!! How do you think these rich poker players make money. ? You have to contribute to the pool and not be a fool. Sponsors are not putting up six figure prize pools. If they run a tournament with a 500k guarantee that means 1000 entrants are putting up $500 a head. $1mil guarantee $1650 2 mil $3500 per head. If MLE changed the structure implementing $25 to $50 registration fees spread out among 25 to 50 entries , there would be more payouts and everyone would go hope happy. Instead its like ” Dont bitch aside from travel expenses there is no out of pocket cost to enter the contest and we are supplying you with an AYCE free lunch or dinner for 10 min make the most of it”

MLE is a business. I think most of you are naive. You sign the contract or you don’t. And you should follow it. Sure, it’s great that people can now make their own opportunities outside of MLE. If you want to, do that. But if you sign a contract and then cheat and then complain if you are “caught”, why sign in the first place. You want it all ways. I do think what would be absolutely the best and cut down on a lot of discontent is to pay every person who participates in a contest down to the last place, even if last place is very small. It is the distribution which is highly inequitable. Almost everyone pays their own way but no one ever said competitors expenses would be covered. You do all know that there was a time in the beginning when people competed without any prize money.

Also the terms of the contract are black and white, but I think a lot of eaters, (not all) may not fully understand what the contract means or what WILL happen if you breach it. I know for me, I was a naive young kid who thought that getting to compete in contests was the coolest thing in the world….. That I was part of a fun community, got to travel and make money. REALITY: I SIGNED ALL RIGHTS AWAY FOR 36 MONTHS IN REGARDS TO EATING ANYTHING WHATSOEVER IN ANY MEDIA WITHOUT MLE PERMISSION. I’ve had to tell people “no” on certain opportunities that could have been beneficial to me. I had to pay my way to all contests and ALWAYS there would be the top 4 eaters at each contest to haul in the prize money. If MLE is a business and needs to make this large profit, HOW ABOUT REINVESTING SOME OF THAT MONEY INTO IMPROVING THE FORMAT IF THE CONTESTS. Maybe hire a social media guy who knows what the hell they are doing or better yet do live streams of contests…All that “funny” competitive eating jargon is not funny anymore. It’s old boring and stale. The Shea’s are living in 2004, hanging onto that magical time they once experienced. There are NEW and Fresher options available. I bet I could partner with a major hot dog sponsor and put on an event equaling Nathan’s if I really wanted to. It’s not that hard….

I would say a ranking of #38 to #40 would have suited him just right but no George had some sort of thing for the guy keeping him around at #23 when everyone knows 1lb of bologna against someone they picked off the gutter is not worthy of that type of rank

  53. anonymous said

Another thing to keep in mind . George Shea has some sort of serious saliva issue . On a number of occasions prior to the contest , he constantly spits during his monologue and majority of that unintentional saliva makes its way to either the plates or the food. You greatly underestimate what it takes to pull off a Nathans. MLE has been building. Sure, some things change just like the economy. Intimidation is how you received it, but if you do not follow a contract, whether kindly or not, you have violated trust and something you fully agreed to. Why do so many say “Greed”. Honestly, no one knows what the MLE books look like nor should they. I just do not understand this disconnect about the contract. Some people even blamed eatfeats for “outing” them. I have successfully run a world wide campaign to convince a billion dollar company to bring back a soft drink from my childhood. I partnered with an advertising agency to erect 15 billboards in the greater Los Angeles area targeting 3 Pepsi facilities, I raised $3,000 from crowd funding and another $5,000 to rent a mobile billboard truck and drove it to Pepsi Headquarters demanding any sort of meeting with a representative. I sat down and discussed my concerns with the public relations team and the head of marketing for PepsiCo. I also attained 37,000 signatures on a petition which I presented to Pepsi. From start to finish within an 8 month period, Pepsi hand delivered the first 6 pack of New Crystal Pepsi to my house on December 8th. If I can do that, I can partner with a hot dog company and creare an event equal to Nathan’s. Regardless if it’s no easy task, I strive to be in challenging situations. I stand by my statement. I am just as passionate about proving the Shea’s wrong as I am for my above actions regarding Crystal Pepsi.

I think MLE would have a better justification for their evil contracts if they paid the eaters more and grew their business. Right now, an NFL team can tell their players “no outside football or even pick-up games”. But then again, the players get paid lots of money. So if MLE wants to do that and restrict eaters, they need to pay up and have a more equitable contract. They need to offer more “consideration”, which is a legal term. If not, eaters will continue to break the contract.

Didn’t NBA players a while ago want 55% of the profits? I think they settled on 52% or something like that.

Burger King contemplated an eating contest to promote addition of hot dogs to the menu. If Kobayashi, Molly, Pat, Bob, LA Beast, Furious Pete …came to them with a proposal, they might reconsider.

Why even compare a joke like MLE to NBA or NFL?

Twitch has a creative section where its not just gaming, however they do not allow food related stuff (other then cooking) at this time. Im working on changing it myself. As for LA Beast, I say go for it and make a contest rival nathans on the 4th. Would love to see it.

Untrue. They have a sub-forum which allows CE. Many of the eaters post there.

Because if you want to be the best, you have to emulate the best. Of course, one has to wonder if the Shea brothers have any interest beside pocketing money.

OJ: All Pro eaters cannot participate in Kobayashi events, per the contract they sign.
