Joe LaRue attempted the gyro challenge at South Side 6 in Bowling Green, Ohio and believes he was given larger than normal gyros to make it impossible for him to win the $666 prize. Will Millender also attempted the challenge.

Its unfortuniate that challanges such as this exsist. a challange should be the same for everyone. When it is made made smaller (aprox 1 to 1lb 4oz for some little girl, and then when a larger male comes in made twice the size( I brought a scale wt 1lb 14oz ,1lb 15oz …totall weight 11+ lbs), many would consider this fraudlent …and a scam. if anyone wants to dispute this just look at the pictures. this so called champion shows 3 gyros completly wraped in foil and laying flat in the tray the other pics show a much larger product, mine would only fit two. Avoid this scam and do whatever it takes to shut down this challange

That’s a shame Joe, 666 in the prize money amount sort of puts things in perspective. 🙁

Anonymous:Nov 7:10:34 pm was right-this site is corrupt & full of favoritism. Why else would you feature some shit-ass eating challenge & fail to report that The Great Gavonne won his first eating contest by taking the World Doritos Eating Championship in Washington Square Park on Saturday? This is the biggest news in competitive eating history & you don’t even mention it,or the fact that he placed a distant second to “Cookie” Jarvis in the wing contest that took place last week.Give the man his props!

    Joe is absolute correct.
This is the response they posted ON THEIR OWN WALL…

“Hey Will, Definitely stop by and give the 6 gyro challenge a try. we have had 1 winner out of 28 people who have tried. It cost $60 to enter and you have 60 min to finish all 6 MONSTER GYROS which weigh in at a pound 1/2 each easily. you can walk in when ever and say you’re up for the challenge and we’ll get you started, you have to finish all 6 in the store, no bathroom breaks or leaving when you start. we are open 8-11 mon.-thurs. & sun. 8-12 on fri. & sat. we look forward to seeing you, good luck”

There’s no mistaken that they are trying to advertise them to me at 1/2 lbs each. When I get there, the owner, who I’m sure is the guy that runs the joint, acts all surprised when I said that and he and the wife are like “no, no, no they are at least 1.5 lbs” and shows me the sign they have and points to it and says “see, it says monster”. What I had on my tray was easily 10 lbs, not “easily 3 lbs” as they suggested.

And like Joe said, mine were exploding out of the box and barely fit while some of the others are nice and perfectly fit.
Such an odd place for a challenge too because it’s a little hole in the wall, gas station looking thing.

I should have went to Pittsburgh instead… (There’s something you’ll never hear anyone say, LOL)

Uh, Will, you quote them as writing, “which weigh in at a pound 1/2 each.” I think “a pound 1/2” means a 1.5 pounds.

I do realize restaurants sometimes vary the size of a challenge item (The Broken Yolk is one) and I am not saying Joe and Big Will were not screwed. However, this is how I read the statement:

you have 60 min to finish all 6 MONSTER GYROS which weigh in at a pound 1/2 each easily

To me , that seems to state each one weighs 1.5 lbs. (“a pound 1/2 each“). Or am I not seeing something?

“Easily” leaves it open. Could be more, in my opinion. They must be lawyers in their off hours.

@Stephanie – I would definitely read it as 1.5 lbs each as well. HOWEVER because they didn’t write it that way tells me that they are hoping people misread what the challenge is and that they’re trying to trick people with the odd way of writing one and 1/2 pounds! Where has anyone seen 1.5 lbs written as a pound 1/2 each???? That’s just not “normal”

  12. BigWillTheChamp said (Registered February 1, 2009)

    November 8, 2010 @ 1:34 pm

You know what. I’ll take it back then. I guess I read it wrong. That being said, like Larell said, who types “1.5 lbs” like that, thus my confusion.
Whatever, they got my money either way…

  13. Anonymous said

I think it’s just sloppy typing and a lack of proofreading, like what you find on the blogs competitive eaters. “A pound 1/2” probably was supposed to be written “a pound AND A 1/2.”

    November 8, 2010 @ 2:26 pm

Stephanie & Larell first, thanks for not hiding behind the anonymous moniker. I was expecting about 9 lbs of challenge but when they are 2+ lb over that it’s kind of suspicious. I did take a scale with me and I should have walked out but I drove 2&1/2 hours I just expect clarity and consistency as GW said “fool me once shame on you,,, um won’t get fooled again”

I heard about this challenge and tried to do some research. I just called the restaurant and they said it was around 1.5 lbs. for each gyro, which to me equates to ~7.5 lbs., not the 10+ they got. This was about 2 months ago.

@Joe – yeah, I can understand going ahead with it anyhow after traveling all that time. Just seems u got the raw end of the deal with them adding food to it. Their whole thing seems a bit shady with the weird “a pound 1/2” and then “easily” added to it. What the heck does “easily” mean? Um, we’re gonna just add as much to it as we want?????? I agree; I wish people would post under their real names; what’s the point of hiding 🙂

@Will – Really???? They actually claim those are the same size???? Now it was hard to see the amount in your container because of lid being closed; was it the same count – 2? Because it’s obvious that the ones in her container were smaller since there was so much room in the container whereas yours were so packed the lid couldn’t close?

Thanks Joe for your nice comment.

Yeah the difference in those pics is pretty startling. I hate when restaurants do that. Sometimes it’s the employees don’t know any better, are not trained properly, or are teenagers and tend to go a little crazy; other times it’s on purpose.

The best thing I could suggest is to confirm beforehand what the item is supposed to weigh and bring a scale. If they go overweight and do not fix it, walk away. Do not pay in advance.

I believe it is actually 6 gyros at 1.5 lb.s each. So that should be a total of 9 lbs. In any case, that is more than nmost humans can eat, including this girl! Yikes!

BB needs to wrap his head around something most people know and understand. An idea cannot be copyrighted, OJ stole nothing. Moving in on people’s territory is called free market. I just cannot believe that BB persists in his relentless misunderstanding of how the world works. The second part he misunderstands is the Golden Rule, and I guess he really thinks that he is correct, that demands of OJ can be made, even threatening ones. It isn’t about trying to make BB feel less worthy but he does seem to make himself and his website look that way.

Restaurant challenges are generally poor in terms of consistency. And that’s the risk you accept when you offer to play by the restaurant’s rules… the only way to “shut these things down” would be for people to stop accepting the challenges.

If the gyros were atleast 1.5 lbs, Why did you even try. It sounds like you allready gave up before you started. If you go and do a challenge you have to expect them to change. You (Will) probably starting bragging about being a competitive eater. There is nobody to blame but yourself. I can’t believe your crying about this. Sign a contract with the IFOCE or AICE and suck it up. You got suckered into a challenge that you thought was easy money for eating 3lbs. Did you really think only 1 in 28 people can do that?

  44. Anonymous said

    February 14, 2011 @ 5:10 pm

Just tried this challenge as well. I can confirm – Yes nearly 2lbs per gyro. They should state Super Mega Double Meat Gyros. The pita alone is nearly a foot around. I’ve eaten large double meat gyros before (3 in a sitting no issues). I could barely get down two of these. Gyro meat is not particularly juicy to begin with so water (the enemy of eating more) was absolutely necessary. Agreed that winners photo does not stack up to what was served for mine. If you’re a gambler, I suggest you spend the $60 on lotto tickets in the shop and buy a regular gyro and drink for lunch. Good gyro – impossible challenge. By the way, the gyros were so big the containers would not close to hold two and I when grabbed them out of the car one completely broke in half.
