Monster deli sandwich at Sarge’s Deli

Diners who are looking for a Manhattan challenge after the termination of Hill Country’s “Feed Your Face” meal might want to consider the Monster at Sarge’s Deli, billed as the largest sandwich in New York.

update “Honky275” has a gallery of his Monster sandwich attempt. He received a Sarge’s T-shirt, but that achievement might merit an asterisk according to his caption:

I was debating whether I could hide bits of bread in my napkin, when I realized I could take advantage of the shift change among the wait-staff. If I left the table at JUST the right time, the new waiter or waitress would see a plate with just a few bites of corned beef on it, and perhaps assume that I was done with my meal – and not realize that a certified challenge was taking place….

Look, it was my first eating challenge ever – I took advantage of my surroundings, and I’m sure that if I stayed there until breakfast time, I eventually would have been hungry again, but it’s just not safe to eat meat that’s been left out overnight, right? So let’s just grab the t-shirt and head for the door…while I can still walk upright.

The Monster is after the numbered combination sandwiches and costs $29.95

The size and awards, if any, are not listed.

You get a free teashirt and thats it. Sandwich is $29.95 whether you complete it or not. Most eaters dont like to part with money so i doubt many could care less. I signed for ribs. The return engagement of the KING! Well maybe

it is obvious that you are not a competitive eater or you would have taken this down in less than an hour. You are a joke. Dont go back there again and embarass the owner. You speak of it being a scam. What scam? It is a scam if they advertise something for free if you finish it when they know you cant finish it. For your troubles all you got was a stinkin teashirt and no free meal .

Brian is right on target, We as pro eaters can do this challange with our eyes closed, but why should we do this and give them free pr with nothing back in return? At least at the carnegi you eat two # 13s and you get the meal free..Guys wake up ……no more free publicity

I think if you finish the first one you get the second for half price ad if you finish both the third one is free. If you cant finish the second one its full price. They get you either way. Almost sure thats how they do ti but check with the deli to make sure. Word to the wise those stingy asses that run the joint make sure there is not a crumb left on your plate

If you are mid to low ranked competitive eater do not even bother with Sarge sandwich only because of the sour dough bread. An establishment that uses sour dough ensures to make it twice as hard for someone to finish the sandwich,. They used the sour dough bun for the 6lb burger at Yaphank. Pretty fucked up when a restaurant deliberatly makes it difficult for you to complete a challenge that offers nothing in return except for the bragging rights of finishing it. Only in America CHeck that Only in NYC

The Sarge sandwich only weighs 4.5 pounds and should be able to be completed by anyone ranked.

Perhaps I already did. How else would I know how much it weighs? Don’t bother asking for proof, one anonymous commenter to another.

I am the Honky275 referenced above. I was (sort of) joking on my photo blog.

What I had left on my plate at the time I left Sarge’s could officially be classified as “crumbs”. In the judgement of the waitress, I completed the challenge and ate the Monster Sandwich in one sitting. OK, so I got up from the table a couple of times to stretch my legs. But I did NOT cheat. I didn’t hide bread in my napkin, I didn’t throw bits of the sandwich away in the restroom – I merely stated that doing such a thing was possible.

As for the fairness of the challenge – if you complete the sandwich (which is delicious), why should you get it free? You ate the sandwich in all its deliciousness! Isn’t a free t-shirt enough?

And to all who might think it’s easy to eat it quickly – go ahead, give it a try. That sourdough bread will expand in your stomach and slow you down. Which is why it took me four hours. There’s no time limit on the challenge, which is why I picked it for my first-ever eating event.

This is funny. This post reminds me of the first time I tried the Alaska-Size Challenge (24″ pizza) solo at Neighbors Pizza in Olivehurst, California. Bikers often go to this place to initiate their new members and have a good time. They are really nice people. They came in that night and saw me doing it and they got really excited since they were planning to do it too. One of the bikers saw that I had about 10 pieces out of 32 left and that I was struggling. He appeared to be the leader of the club. He asked if they had a camera trained on me as he was going to grab a few pieces and help me. LOL! Of course, I declined. To me it wouldn’t be a true victory if I cheated. Afterall, I am doing this for myself, to prove I can overcome a challenge. I failed, but I had fun and enjoyed the atmosphere.

Ok, back to the main topic of this post! carry on… 🙂
