Northern Virginia Magazine on Sonya Thomas

Northern Virginia Magazine has the most in-depth article about Sonya Thomas seen in quite some time (via Washington Post State of NoVa blog) Some observations from the article:

  • Sonya declines discussion about a possible marriage to a Mr. Thomas.
  • She says that she has to pay her own travel expenses including a trip to New York City for the Nathan’s finals in 2011 which consumed most of her $10,000 prize. (Travel expenses for finalists are supposedly paid by Nathan’s)
  • The Jacksonville, AR Wing Ding is listed as a possible future contest site, but the entire festival was cancelled.
  • The article includes a behind the scenes look at Ben’s Chili Bowl contest held in October

She can drive down to NY from VA cost her less than $100 with gas and tolls . What the hell is she talking about expenses consumed her $10 grand prize ? unless she stopped off at AC and made a quick deposit at the black jack table

So many articles these days have inaccurate information. The Washington Times, for example, is notorious (like BOB) for inaccuracy.

Oftentimes they don’t even get it right about who participated in a contest and who didn’t.

Things are often misconstrued. It seems illogical that the writer would say that Sonya took home very little and spent $10,000 for a week in New York. Everyone knows that is possible but unlikely even if someone paid for everything. The implication is very negative, both for Sonya and MLE. It should be the writers responsibility to double check things and this is a very long article so there is no excuse for misconstruing. Logic should have been used, if there was uncertainly, it should have been checked. I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of the writer, definitely not Sonya.

I have no idea how the Nathans contest works in terms of getting to it. I would think that now Sonya and Joey get their transportation as the reigning champs. Those who qualify stay or are given a room in a very nice hotel, it seems. But that is a practical matter. They all have to be ready to ride the bus to Coney. They may get a per diem as well. However, it does seem true that almost all eaters have to pay their own way for transportation everywhere and most do not make money but rather they spend it. That is not going to change. So everyone, heads up, try to support each other instead of tearing each other, eaters, fans, organizations etc.down because for everyone except for number 1, you are not going to make money, either by eating or bitching about things.
