Decent turn out for such a small purse…

Seeing Pete finally compete against IFOCE eaters would be very interesting to see.

Let’s hope Pete will be in this too. Pat and Pete are very much alike in eating style. And it would be between those two, obviously. Gravy and the others don’t stand a chance. This is between Pat and Pete. Moreover, this is about pride. So the stakes between them are way up. I hope this happens. And I want to see the outcome.

As much as I would like to see Pete get into this one…there is no way they are going to let him in and put an ass whoopin’ on the IFOCE eaters. I’m sure they will come up with some lame excuse as to why he can’t enter….when all along we all know its because he’d eat every one there under the table!

The lame excuse is um….lemme see…oh he’s not an AMATEUR. They’re no looking some self-aggrandizing azzhat, they’re looking for AMATEURS, you know – people who don’t hold world titles or have documentaries made about them. I can see why MLE isn’t interested in him. This isn’t the first time he’s tried this crap. I guess he just doesn’t get it… or more likely just doesn’t care. The rules don’t apply to him.

A full field of eaters is 15. Twelve spots go to professionals, who’ve already signed up through the International Federation of Competitive Eating website. The final three spots are reserved for Canadian amateurs, who must win their way in through a contest run by Smoke’s Poutinerie.

It never ceases to be humorous how we can keep a straight face while having heated discussions about who should and shouldn’t be allowed in an eating contest. Just let the guy eat!

As far as I know, the sponsor is King, if they want Pete in the contest, then the IFOCE doesn’t have a whole lot of pull.

Btw, I’m quite certain Pat will destroy Pete. I see Pete placing 3/4-1lb behind Pat and maybe .5lb ahead of Tim… Although Tim is good with fried tatters and he does like his Gravy.

And where for out thou eaters of said Poutinerie? Be thee as they may I doubtest thine has the strategery or fortitude to defeat me and mine. I will beat upon the breast of Joey Chestnut treble times so that he shall know my triumphant call yet umpteenth again and forsooth the Federation.

It’s funny to you because you never stood a chance of making a penny at the table. Not so funny if someone misrepresents themselves and it costs you money. Wake up.

Wow, “Men Bonson” is certainly well-spoken. Or well-written. I can’t believe someone actually ‘spent’ their time writing a message using archane vocabulary like that. I don’t remember anyone on this blog ever using words like ‘forsooth’ or ‘treble.’

I don’t think “umpteenth” really counts as Old English, either.

This must be some attempt at satire. Or something.

As for the actual subject of this thread, I think it would be interesting to see Pete compete with the IFOCE… this contest looks like the perfect venue. It’s in Canada, and open to unsigned talent.

A lot of his supporters assume that he would annihilate IFOCE’s best.

But how will they react if Pete actually loses? Will this just become a conspiracy thread?

O, he is as tedious as a tired horse, a railing wife; worse than a smokey house: I had rather live with cheese and garlic in a windmil, far, than than feed on cates and have him talk to me in any summer-house in Christendom.

I think Pete should be able to compete in this contest.Pete would have to probably have to sign a contract.I am not sure He would do this.

It has to be really tough not competing in your own Home town. The locals will be wanting Pete and the sponsor would be smart to make sure this happens.

It sounds terrible, but I can imagine some of those conspiracy theorists saying that “Furious Pete was screwed by the IFOCE.” Or worse, that “Furious Pete was Furiously Screwed By the IFOCE.”

We should just let the eating speak for itself.

I hope Pete gets in. I’m positive it’s gonna happen this time, although Pete must be ready to sign a contract if he is asked to. Good luck Pete!

I very much agree with you that we should just let the eating speak for itself. But I don’t think it will happen. Because IF Pete were to beat the number 2 IFOCE eater, Pat, then IFOCE would lose a LOT of their “clout”. IFOCE has too much to lose. The Shea brothers can’t let that happen. This is not about eating, this is just politics. As always. It’s not about the best or anything, it’s just about politics. The Shea brothers will find a way to force Pete out of this contest. This is not about the “best eater”, this is just about “Shea Politics”.

You are all wrong. If it was about having the best eaters than Pete would be there. It’s not about politics. It’s about business. The IFOCE can only profit and put on great contests for us if they can have control over the exclusivity of the Eaters. Pete has proven to be a Marketing genius on his own and get himself his own movies, trips across the world and a room full of records without the help or interest of an organization. He out-shined and eclipsed AICE in the short time he was with them. As great a guy and eater that he appears to be, I think it would be very hard for him to abide to the rules of the contract over a very long period of time. He appears to be somebody that makes his own destiny and I’m sure will continue to do so. I cant wait to meet him.

Maybe I expect too much from competitive eating and shouldn’t compare it to other sports, but it just seems trivia to exclude someone from a contest on ANY grounds. Major League Baseball doesn’t exclude certain players (they used to, and that was a dark chapter in their history). The NBA and NFL don’t exclude certain players. These sports are open to all comers and are made up of the best players in the world.

As for someone “misrepresenting themselves” and costing eaters money by gaining entrance into this contest, I disagree with that argument. If you don’t want to get beaten by a good eater, then you should become a better eater yourself.

Steakbellie is “on the money” when he discusses Pete’s ability to draw a following and make money without a large organization backing him up.

Pete might not need the IFOCE, but it’d certainly be a feather in his loaded cap to beat some of their talent in a sanctioned contest. That would settle these hypothetical “who’s better than whom” questions that keep getting asked endlessly.

I agree that the IFOCE doesn’t “need” Pete for the reason that he’s got too much of an independent streak, and the company would have a tough time monopolizing his celebrity status for their profit purposes.

But, if IFOCE is supposed to be the world’s leading body for the sport of competitive eating, they really need to have the world’s best eaters among its ranks.

Pete may not be the “best” eater out there, but he’s certainly more skilled and capable than many on the current IFOCE roster. It’s difficult for the organization to maintain full credibility as a sports organization if they keep one of the best out. IFOCE’s existence as a political body is another matter entirely.

The parallel that I draw is the situation with Ben Monson prior to his receiving an IFOCE ranking. Anyone who followed his exploits on Eatfeats had to be impressed with the manner in which he was absolutely demolishing restaurant challenges. He was setting record times that seemed absurd. He also established the fact that he had a very high consumption capacity.

It was clear to me – and I hope a few others – that this young man belonged in the sport of CE. With a few competitions under his belt, he has shown that is enriching the sport and providing some needed vitality in the higher ranks.

I imagine that adding Pete would mix it up a bit further.

There are, no doubt, some personality conflicts hiding in the background, but that could make for more exciting contests on the whole.

From the Fed’s perspective, as good as Pete may be, his autonomous spirit probably gives them the willies. It would be bad news for them: if he signed, beat a couple of their top four or five eaters, then high-tailed it from the organization—-not a favorable risk-reward ratio with the Furious one.

Personally, and I’m just conjecturing, I doubt it’s Pete’s best interest to sign w/ the Fed. He’s likely no match for Joey, or Pat, let alone Koby (or even Sonya in most events). At least where he’s at, there are enough people who believe Pete MIGHT be the best in the world. Why would he want to risk proving he’s not, and, in turn, risk incurring an opportunity cost associated with that balloon bursting?

Not a very good risk-reward for Pete either!

Give one wildcard to Furious Pete. Give another wildcard to Dale Boone. If both show up, it will show that Dale Boone is NOT a world champion, and just loses all the time, not even finishing in the top 10 against REAL eaters. And Pete, I think he would be among the top 3 of IFOCE, not that he would ever join that “club”.
