The Doodle restaurant closes after 58 years

The New York Times has an article about the sudden closing of the Yankee Doodle Coffee Shop in New Haven, Connecticut after 58 years of operation. Several groups have formed to attempt to resurrect the restaurant. Ryan Nerz wrote an article about Tim “Eater X” Janus breaking the record in the restaurant’s famous burger challenge.

    That’s sad, because the YD Coffee Shop is not just a restaurant, but an icon of competitive eating challenges. The two people that always come to mind when I think of that BLDG are Bill Black Tie Stobierski and Gentleman Joe.

    I think it would be only fitting to have Joe’s tongue print forever cemented in front of the restaurant to honor the spot where all those Doodle Burgers hit the ground during one of Joe’s rare reversals in his near successful attempt to break Bill’s record at the time.

    I had to get that out Joe …. Ah … now that was a catharsis … 🙂
