A very interesting film, perhaps a bit long, screen quality fair in many places, but if you want to understand Kobayashi, do not miss it. A mystery no longer, the film has parts in Japan, Kobayashi with his Father, paying homage to his deceased Mother, explaining his meaning of freedom. He never could understand that it wasn’t just the contract or was part of it. You cannot eat on the 4th, then eat in a contest with a different hotdog company. He didn’t’ understand about sponsorship. Yes, the contract is too much in favor of MLE without paying the “other” eaters. But you either do it or walk away. Many have.

The contract should have been explained to him in detail when he started with MLE in 2002. Apparantly he never bothered looking into it because he was never actually part of the circuit. He only competed in Nathans and Krystals . Because he was clueless he felt he could eat and compete where ever he pleased. I dont believe he was affiliated with MLE when he competed in Glutton Bowl because Sheas immediately asked their current ranked members who were chosen for the show to sign a contract if they wanted to get paid and compete by FOX network . FOX ran the show not the Shea brothers Kobe at the time was an outsider. When Kobe competed in Nathans for the first time he was only asked to sign the waiver agreement and not a contract. I could be wrong but i dont believe he ever signed a contract with MLE up until they stuck it in his face in 2010 when he was doing his own thing . His response was “what the hell is this?

The contract was never explained to him because he never sought a translator in Japan. He got on a plane, competed, flew back to Japan. (His English, despite having lived in the US for about five years, is almost non-existent.) The contract wasn’t an issue since he rarely competed. Once he moved to the states, land of freedom and opportunity as far as he was concerned, he had hired someone in a sports agency to advise him. He was shocked that MLE was to control all of his eating. He has never understood why. His translator, now his wife, also does not think highly, an understatement, of MLE. Kobayashi was shocked by American culture where people express opinions freely and people can boo at events. For the most part, this doesn’t happen in Japan. He hated USA, USA as a rallying cry though Free Kobayashi was fine with him.

Did Kobe actually think the Shea brothers were operating their organization out of the goodness of their heart without intention of generating a profit in their pockets? This guy was obviously more naive than i thought he was. I guess he does not understand the concept of living in the US especially NYC where the negativity far outweighs the positive and all anyone cares about is making a $ 1 . I cannot blame him for going back to Japan . Heartless animals who only see a dollar sign and nothing else

Koby did not go back to Japan for long. He returned to the US and has been living there for about five years. Since he is now married to an American, he does not have to rely on his special status visa to do so. He isn’t going back to Japan to live.
Koby is smart, he went to school in economics. He wasn’t naive, didn’t think about the Sheas money but rather was naive to think that he could eat anywhere he wished, do any contest he wished. The Sheas never calmly and clearly explained that to him in a way he could understand. They do not have the best bedside manner.

this is why there will always be problems with the sheas and the eaters. They never return emails they never come to the phone . Long drawn out scenario in which communication with their eaters is virtually non existent

For the most part, the eaters understand and speak English. It is unbelievable that they couldn’t come to an understanding with Koby. They could have hired a translator. They had Bobby before all of the hoopla. George Shea is not only a villain, he seems to take pleasure in it. His so called humor is often cruel. Even in his introductions, he uses sarcasm. Not funny.

If George Shea doesn’t like you he won’t tell you to your face or initiate a confrontation Instead he will take pleasure in embarrasing the shit out of you on stage in front of an audience by mocking your eating ability or youre physical attributes . He is a sly one watch it !

Muhammad Ali once said in a talk show interview years before he developed Parkinson “i like your show and i like your style but your pay so cheap i wont be back for awhile” It was funny the first time around but when he kept repeating it on one talk show after another when he had parkinson, it sounded stupid and stale but the talk show hosts were too dumb to pick up on it . George Shea repeats the same redundant line during his intros . ” This man remembers what he ate for breakfast april 3 1983″ Or whatever date he makes up. Again like Ali it was somewhat humorous the first time but when you hear it time and time again it sounds corny and stupid Find some new material George
