The University of Maryland student paper has an article about the new competitive eating club team. Phil Fiore, winner of the 2009 Whiz Bowl cheesesteak eating contest, is one of the members. The club's ultimate goal is to have a national championship in May.

I think it’s great that these kids are having fun and bringing attention to competitive eating. However, they need to sure to keep it safe. That means EMTs at every contest. I don’t want negative attention brought to ce, if some kid gets hurt and pushes him or her too hard.

I agree with that. CE benefits from exposure, but it’s gotta stay safe. Every time someone dies (rare) or is seriously injured in an eating contest, CE is derided as unsafe, inhumane, a freak show, and all the other negatives one can dream up. Having more people in CE raises the odds for unfortunate incidents.
