Kobayashi sets Krystal qualifier record w/89

update #5Andrew “Skinnyboy” Lane has a trip report

update #4 The Krystal Square Off blog has a contest report which says that Kobayashi ate 100 burgers in 8 minutes the day before the contest. There is also a gallery in which Kobayashi shows off his post-contest stomach.

Al.com has another article

update #3 AL.com has a gallery

update #2 UAB student life has some short videos. The contest was not held inside the stadium

update Steve Ramirez was second w/24, the 3.5+ ratio might still be a record.

According to the Krystal Square Off twitter, Kobayashi ate 89 Krystals in Birmingham today, breaking Joey Chestnut’s qualifier record by 2. Super Paul ate 20. The 4+ ratio between first and second place might be an IFOCE record.

Here is a flashback to another famous international visitor to Alabama – a video of the Rolling Stones recording “Wild Horses” in Muscle Shoals before the infamous Altamont concert.

The most significant previous intersection of competitive eating and UAB athletics probably occurred when UAB soccer player Pam Cooney became half of the first all female pair to finish the Pointersaurus Pizza challenge.

Damn i just did 30 in a practice this morning with some of my free krystal burgers . I would have paid my tribute to Elvis with flying colors on the 21st in Memphis . . To the person who screwed me out of the trip to Memphis and i wont mention names, i think i’ll fly instead of depending on you . Shit ! Good job Kobe you always make it look so simple. He makes the burgers look like he is soaking a piece of lettuce in both hands .

Man, if 89 is Kobayashi’s “safe number”, then that’s bad news for Joey.

Has anyone noticed that elite eaters such as Pete Murniki and Kevin Karr did not compete in Krystals this year. For the sake of the league i hope to god they have not retired from competitive eating It would be a serious blow to the sport

Me go, but not picked in stupid rookie lottery. Feet hurt from long ride in Flintstone’s car, me never borrow that piece of slate again! George Slate must no like me, him could have made me special exemption pick – him have no caveman jokes ready, me guess.

bludgeoning results me forced to watch:
    Kobayrocksi 89
    Steve-O Rockmirez 24
    Super RockBreaker Bonehead Barlow 20
Kevin the Quarry Guy from Chattanooga 18
    Andrew Skinnyboulder Lane 16
    Steve Rockmirez Sr. 16
    the rest…too lousy to report

The man was coasting through his burgers – if anything, we slowed him down!
I was leaning towards four people to win the Finals – Joey, Pat, Bob, and the Tsunami – after being lucky enough to eat next to Koby, Humble Bob in Chattanooga, near Deep Dish in Atlanta…..Koby (who was feeling slightly car sick when he arrived) had the maximum burger intake with what seemed like the least effort. I don’t know how Joey’s been preparing, but he needs to racket it up, install a garbage disposal in his stomach, or attach a vacuum to his butt, if he intends to keep the Krystal crown.
If Vegas gives out some value on two bets – Koby to win, and the record being broken, those are the plays. By the way, it was nice to see Kevin from Chattanooga, mingle with Koby and his entourage of fawning felines, and finally getting to talk with Skinnyboy Lane. The Rodriguez men will be back – they are ready to rock the circuit, and ruin my rankings!
The best thing about this year’s condensed Krystal format – getting to meet more meat mashers. The worst thing – everybody has to eat and run (including myself), so it’s impossible to get to know everybody as much as you’d like. We need an Annual Eater’s convention, complete with awards presentation, free samples of all the stuff we will be stuffing ourselves with all year, and, of course, bunnettes – wouldn’t that be great?

89, wow, that’s a lot of burgers. Guess he wasn’t just going to coast to an easy qualifier and then turn it on for the finals. Good luck!!!

IFOCE is too cheap to have an eaters convention. So are the eaters. Something like that was brought up in the past and nobody bothered following through. SPBB you really want to get to know everybody? With the exception of a few good people most of them go home and don’t want to know you.

Pete and Kevin are certainly two anchors of the ifoce without which it cannot survive.

Koby you are THE MAN! I have total faith in you at the Finals. I think it will take well over 100 to win, however. Best of luck to you and Joey, but my heart is with you Koby! You are the greatest competitive eater of all time and you have many American fans who love you. Now, go and get that title!
