Ian Hickman in the Fairfax Times

The Fairfax Times has an article about Ian Hickman and his quest for a strawberry title.

Hickman said he first became interested in becoming a competitive eater after watching actor John Candy eat a huge steak in the movie “The Great Outdoors,” and later consumed his own 64-ounce porterhouse in a Lexington, Ky., steakhouse that offered the meal free to anyone who could finish it in less than 45 minutes. Hickman ate the steak – along with a side and a salad – in only 19 minutes.

“That’s when I knew I might have talent as a competitive eater,” he said.

I know strawberries are Ian’s weakness, but I have faith in him this year.

Philly Guy I have faith that one day you’ll be half as good as Ian in at least one food.

Ian is the MAN! Him A GI JOE hands down are the best eaters not tied down to an IFOCE contract.

I like the way you put that Jake. I don’t think too many of the better eaters feel overly restrained by those bindings. 🙂

Rhonda… I just meant it like free agency. If people want to consider this sport then we should talk about it like a sport. Ian and GI Joe are free to compete wherever they wish. Eaters in the IFOCE are signed up to do only IFOCE events. Therefore, they are “under contract” I wasn’t meant to be negative.

I know Jake. You’re right in what you say, and I laughed when I read it because it is basically true–just different strokes for different folks.

I agree that Ian and Joe are the two best MALE eaters in the AICE. (I still think Elizabeth could win her fair share of contests against either or both of them.) Joe and the floppy-eared one have her outeating Sonya Thomas, so surely they would agree.

    🙂

Jake is right, and he understands something that a lot of people still don’t get even when explained to them. There are IFOCE eaters, and there are Non-IFOCE eaters. An AICE eater is really just a Non-IFOCE eater who just happened to eat at an AICE sanctioned event.

Rhonda, Pete hasn’t competed against either of them yet, but when he does, there might be a change in those views of yours. I was totally impressed with his performance at the collegiates, and it was his first competition.
