i’lltill lose by 30 . it sort of makes nathans put u p more of a purse than 60lbs of hot dogs

I know it’s off subject, but I was driving to work this morning and Pat from Moonachie is on Opie & Anthony trying to eat 50 hard boiled eggs in 30 minutes to win $1000 dollars courtesy of Clerks 2.
    Sounds pretty easy for him.
But he did say he was going to try to eat the whole bucket, which they said contained 96 hard boiled eggs.

I want to try to forget all about this, because it irks me and contradicts the basic notion of competition that I’ve been taught is supposed to be so prevalent in sports…but I can’t.

I don’t buy the argument that “he earned his spot at the table and can do what he wants”, but I also struggle to justify that position. I can’t compare Donahue to a Major League Baseball player whose team has “earned a spot in the World Series” but decides to take every at bat sitting down (literally) just because he wants to “enjoy the greatest ballpark ever built.” I can’t do that because that’s a team sport, and that deadbeat player is also letting down his teammates, not just himself.

I guess you can compare Donahue to a pro golfer. Let’s say he’s on the PGA tour and he’s “qualified” for a spot in the Masters tournament. But instead of stepping up to the first tee, pulling out his driver and giving the fans something to watch, he decides to play the entire 18 holes with his putter because “he wants to enjoy every blade of grass on the greatest golf course ever constructed.” Oh, he also says he did it because he had no chance of beating Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson.

But what’s the common thread that runs throughout baseball, golf, and even competitive eating? The fans. The shmucks who are watching who would GLADLY take a seat at that table (or step up to that tee) and give it their all.

Another common thread is the other competitors who DIDN’T qualify for the event. I don’t need to say how badly they’d like to be there. And what about the eaters who are in the event WITH Donahue. The ones who are busting their ass for themselves, for the fans, and hey, let’s not forget about the sponsors! Basically, Donahue said to all the other eaters at that table: “Screw you and your futile attempt to compete.”…before adding, “By the way, I’ll see you next year!”

For the sake of competition and the sport of competitive eating, let’s hope we never see Jed Donahue at a table again.

Hard boiled eggs are a very tough food to eat fast. I wish Pat luck.

MM you have a very valid point, regarding the fans. But still you can’t totally reject the argument that a person who earns his way to coney by winning a qualifier has not earned the right to do what he wants. One of Charles Barclay’s famous lines was, “I am not a role model.”

I look at Jed as someone who does not like to get showed up. And by excusing himself for eating only a single dog he removes himmself from all the criticism by others that he didn’t measure up (at least in his mind) with his low total. If the top 18 competitors weren’t there and Jed thought he had a chance to win he would have eaten at least 20. That’s Jed.

I understand his decision, but it wasn’t wise. If you earned your spot at the table then do your best. Don’t make a fool out of yourself.

Jed Donahue is definitely not a wise man. If he knew that he wouldn’t have won in the Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Contest then why did he even care to bother entering the contest. He is a very idiotic man.
