New poll: top eating challenge performer of 2008

The new poll asks who you think is the top performer in restaurants’ eating challenges in 2008. The choices are:

  • Elizabeth Canady – set record in Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub’s 3 lb. burger
  • Joey Chestnut – broke 21 year old record for the Big Texan’s 72 ounce steak, also set the record in the Big Foot Lodge’s Sasquatch Challenge
  • “Furious” Pete Czerwinski – set a record for a Canadian 72 ounce steak challenge which beats the Big Texan record also records in the Niagara Falls Italian Challenge, Swingbelly’s BBQ challenge, Filthy McNasty’s burger challenge and came the closest to finishing the Clinton Station Diner’s Zeus burger
  • Brad Sciullo – first person to finish the 20 lb. Belly Bruiser from Denny’s Beer Barrel, also broke the almost 4 year old record for that restaurant’s Ye Olde 96er

If they are any other choices who you think should be in the poll, I will add them.

This poll is limited to North American eaters. Hatsuyo “the Witch” Sugawara is probably in contention for the world top eating challenge performer, but I have not been able to find a list of her eating challenges.

This one isn’t even close in my opinion. Furious Pete gets my vote.

Note that Joey ate the 72 ounce steak DINNER. Steak. Potato. Side salad. 3 shrimp. Roll.

what a joke. Failing counted as an accomplishment.

According to last night’s Man VS Food, over 8,000 people have finished the 72 oz steak and fixings….so Joey’s feat doesn’t seem so impressive. Scuillo did something no one has done – he wins!
On a similar note, why does Adam Richman keep telling us he’s not a competitive eater? If you keep entering eating challenges, you are a competitive eater, and that seems to be the focus of this show.

other than you, Too Much TV, nobody thinks brad did anything at denny’s – neither the 20 lb nor the other one. so he’s not an issue. what joey did with the steak, in that time, whoa

I’m not subich, and I think Brad keeps getting the shaft – he has proven in IFOCE and other contests that he’s an amazing eater – to say he’s not an issue is your opinion. Joey did something 8,000 others did, so maybe he’s not an issue for this question, even though he’s the world’s greatest eater.

Joey should have eaten a second one (like Rich LeFevre did in 2000) to remove any doubt and quiet gullible idiots like Too Much TV.

You said “Joey did something 8,000 others did…”, what you forgot to say was “but he did so much faster”. He in essence won a contest involving 8,000 competitors.

That is an excellent point….Joey was the fastest, and deserves credit, and it is a fantastic accomplishment.
However, let me put it this way, IF Brad did finish his challenge – then his feat is more impressive, because he also beat many challengers over the years, and did something no one has done. So I’m a semi-cynical only semi-gullible idiot, who is basing my choice on what I’ve read has been done. If Sciullo is “found out”, or if he didn’t finish the challenge, Joey wins this poll.

Brad scuillo is like the big foot of compeitive eating, some say his eating skills exist but has no evidence to prove it. Hell I can take a picture next to Angelina Jolie, but that doesnt provide proof that i slept with her.

Brad Scuillo is a true competitive eater. He loves to eat without George Shea’s carnival barking or Badland’s rapping. He can eat without prizes or guaranteed ESPN coverage. He loves his sport and is a eater among eaters. He is stronger than most IFOCE/MLE eaters and does not care for the B.S. of the Shea’s cult of personality. I say cheers to Brad for being true to himself and the true spirit of competitive eating. He deserves every ounce of recognition as he can hold his own pound for pound versus most in the IFOCE/MLE.

As a side note, IFOCE/MLE should settle on a name. What are you guys? Pick one and stick with it.

Cheesecake title rally of 2004 in Brooklyn NY. Overheard one of the shea brothers tell the sponsor “This is just a business venture thats on a roll ,Hopefully it lasts a few years so we can make enough cash to show a profit ” So much for the love of the sport huh? Wake up and smell the coffee

I would like a picture next to Angelina Jolie. Later on, whether she was there or not, I’d sleep with her, hopefully finishing my 96 oz. belly bruiser.

I agree Brad is an incredible eater. But he is an up and comer. Joey is King, until Brad or someone beats him in a contest. Pat is the only real challenger to Joey at this time. Koby makes the top 3 exciting. Brad has a ways to go to join that elite group.

Brad has never shown that he can consume more than 4lbs of food in any competitive eating contest. To even fathom that he can put away a 20lb burger is unrealistic. Some of you dumb idiots are more gullible than i expected. Cause Denny said he ate it means that its the undeniable truth ? Quoting brads own words on youtube, ” Gimme a break dude”.

In fairness to those who say Brad did NOT eat the burger…twice now late in the calendar year, Denny’s has received an enormous amount of national recognition because somebody (first Kate Stelnick, now Brad) POSSIBLY ate one of his huge burgers. There is a huge financial incentive for Denny to allow someone to eat one of these record-breaking hamburgers – he knows he will receive a windfall of free publicity – and the fact that he seems to allow it to happen every couple of years is a little suspicious.

Whatever the case is…who cares anymore? It’s over. Things are slow. Relax. Move on to more important things.

anonymous 10:34 makes a good point. Did you ever think that Brad could have made Denny a very generous cash offer to make up a nice little bullshit story? Like the previous comment mentioned, his capacity is around 4.5 to 5lbs tops

I’m not going to say I think Brad ate the burger, but I think his capacity is quite a bit more than 5 lbs.
