Cataldi on WB 18: “pros contribute very little”
Angelo Cataldi’s most recent blog entry reports that the return of IFOCE eaters to the Wing Bowl in 2010 is not a certainty:
The big question now is whether to open the event back up to the professional eaters next year. I may not have to make that decision since my contract runs out before the next Wing Bowl, but my inclination right now is to keep them out. The pros contribute very little to the actual event. They rarely bother to prepare a procession, they have little or no personality, and they detract from the original intent of Wing Bowl, which is to turn an average Joe into Rocky Balboa for a day. Any input from the listeners and Wing Bowl patrons is welcome here.

I like the way he apologizes for the gap between his posts as if all of us are waiting with bated breath to read what he has to say. And people say i’m selfish? Senseless remark about the pros not contributing anything. Why doesnt he give the real reason which is that he hates presenting a 20k automobile to Joey Chestnut every year. He mentions that his contract runs out and he might not be around. That’s bullshit right there. He will be doing this until he is 90. What else does he have to do?

I can see the point of wanting an average joe to win. That being said, if he wasn’t being completely disingenuous, then he wouldn’t have allowed pros in the first place. Based on reading the Horseman book, it looks like they had Simmons who kept winning and the story of the pros coming in was good story for them, especially his feud with Sonya and then when they saw Joey win every year, started panicking like it was a bad thing. So I think they either make a hard line decision to either not allow pros at all or contract with an organization and present it as David (average joes) trying to knock down Goliath (pros)

The screwed up thing about this is that it keeps a few local pros like myself, Steakbellie, WIng Kong & Humble Bob out. We came into competitive eating thanks to the Wing Bowl. I have heard from alot of WIng Bowl fans and attendees that they like to see how high the numbers can get thanks to the pros. Someone is brainwashing ANgelo and what a shame if WIP caves in to the idea of keeping us out.
