I was pleased to be able compete in both contests. The vast majority of the contestants were really great. The shows were well run. The wings on Saturday were really inconsistent. My first tray rocked, the second tray was horrible. Sunday’s food was much better. I now have a baseline for these contests. I’ll be back next year. Great job Sonya!!

I don’t have the numbers yet, but the contest went down like last year – whoever finished their tray first won, with places after first being determined by remaining weight in tray.

Brian reported the places on his link; I’ll put the numbers up if I get them before they show up on IFOCE.

Trays were eight pounds each, and consisted of one Beef on Weck sandwich (see this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beef_on_weck) (not really what WE had, ours was just roast beef au jus on a kaiser roll), three 1/16 cuts of Bocce pizza {about 1.5 regular slices} (good pizza for the area, let’s not start a fight about who has the best), two dozen Mrs. T’s pierogies (boiled then dipped in butter, not {horrors!} deep fried), some thing called a hog wing (according to research on web, it’s a split non-smoked ham hock) that was grilled and tasted like a regular pork rib; there were five of those, and the rest of the tray was filled with chicken wings. Also as Brian noted, the wings today were bigger and not overcooked like yesterday.

This past Buffalo weekend was my debut as a member of the IFOCE. I had a great time and met some awesome people, although I was not pleased by my results, The wings on Saturday were very dry & Sunday’s Buffet Bowl was great. Thanks to the IFOCE eaters for your support and GREAT JOB SONYA! You are an inspiration and a super champ.

    Totals from the scorecard:

    1.) Sonya Thomas – 5.95 lbs.
    2.) Bob Shoudt – 5.5 lbs.
    3.) Joe LaRue – 4.2 lbs.
    4.) Jim Reeves – 3.7 lbs.
    5.) Russ Keeler – 3.57 lbs.
    6.) William Myers – 3.39 lbs.
    7.) Mike Landrich – 3.05 lbs.
    8.) Dave Goldstein – 2.55 lbs.
    9.) Kevin Carr – 2.08 lbs.

I don’t have the elapsed time yet, but the contest was stopped before the 8 minute mark. It was nice meeting you new guys, Mike, Dave, Shawn, and congratulations to Sonya, Bob, and especially Joe, who had a strong showing after a short CE hiatus and also after placing in both the Traditional and Creative Wing Sauce competitions.

That’s okay Dave. You have to sort of feel your way through the first few contests.

    Thanks for the results W.B.

Then those were good totals for that short amount of time, especially for Sonya and Bob. Sonya usually needs a bit more time, so that her stomach capacity can help out.

She’s really better now than ever.

Yes, I got the results from Ryan. If I am at a contest, I try to get the full results from the scorecard at the end of the contest, so that everybody has some idea of how they did, and not just the top three or four. There was a little delay on these results as Ryan needed to catch a plane out of Buffalo; he said he would e-mail them to me, and I received them this morning.

It’s not like it’s any big secret – if you ask what the results were at the end of the contest, they will generally give them to you. As I work in the IT field, I have access to a computer usually sooner than the people who travel for IFOCE, so I post them if I have them.

That’s a good point W.B., and that’s really decent of you. Every participant deserves to hear how he or she did; not just the top three or four or five.

Here is a reasonable answer to Anon’s question of why the IFOCE post’s the results so late: They already got paid. Tell the sponsors to hold onto the money until the results are posted, then you will see a difference.

Wild Bill. Thanks for all your work. We appreciate it.

BTW There are some excellent pizza places around Buffalo. Bocce isn’t one of them. It’s not bad, but, next time you’re in town, let me take you to Bella Pizza in Lackawanna (maybe 4-5 miles from Dunn Tire Park). You won’t even remember Bocce’s name afterward.

Friends, you will have to excuse The Powerhouse. He’s not too bright. Powerhouse, the sponsors have no interest in timely or complete results posted to the IFOCE’s website. You are foolish to think otherwise.

Anon, don’t call me a friend. I don’t even know you.

Sponsors SHOULD care about timely and complete results. They should care very much how their sponsorship dollars are being used (or not used) to maximize their brand’s online exposure after an event. Their investment shoudn’t end when Joey or Pat or Sonya collects their oversized cardboard check and leaves the mall. There’s a whole lot more the IFOCE can and should be doing to make this a better investement for the sponsor and deliver a better online product for fans.

Pete, I know that everyone else in this forum feels the same way that we do, and there is only one person that doesn’t get all the jokes all the time. It is a waste of time arguing with that person, so I just let it go.

yeah i know the sponsors dont give a shit……………..they got their contest and exposure or whatever………………..the ifoce should give a shit because they do a terrible job of promoting their sport when the contest ends and the winners are announced……arent the shea$ into marketing – shea communications – so shouldnt they do more to grow their brand??????????

  21. Rhonda Evans said

It’s as if the Sheas themselves think competitive eating is a joke, given their subdued (to put it mildly)marketing efforts. That seems very ironic, because that’s how they put food on the table (no pun intended). That’s their bread and butter, is it not?

As an example, how many times in the past several years have you seen them advertise when eaters are going to appear on national TV? I can count all the times on one hand, like when Cookie was on Vegas, Legs on Letterman a couple of years or so ago, and Pat B. on Regis and Kelly last year (to set the Guinness Record in ice cream eating).

Look at the SCORES (no less) of appearances of many, many eaters on late night T.V., the morning shows, and all the radio shows that aren’t even mentioned. It’s left up to the individual eaters to market the event themselves. I’ve never seen anything like it.

The Fed passes up opportunity after opportunity. And they expect C.E. to be the sport of the 21st century? Not if they don’t change the way they think.

Do any of you geniuses’s every stop to think that maybe the shea’s are doing all of this for spite because they enjoy being the center of attention even thought its in a negative sense? By constantly bringing up the topic of sponsors and how poorly the organization treats everyone , you are playing right into their hands. They not only read the comments on this site but also loving every minute of it.

i just cant understand why the shea$ do things this way….. they are in it for the $$$ and thats fine but why do they refuse to do some simple promotion or marketing or web stuff that would boost the interest in their sport???????? the carnival barker hats more or less prove they view the whole ce thing as a joke and they cant believe they make $$$ doing this…….. if they view it as a joke thats fine too but why dont they want to make more $$$???????????

Yeah, actually many of us have stopped to think of many possible reasons, that one included. However, we then go on to reason why they would do it that way, and decided that it was too stupid an idea to even bring up. What would be the advantages of having a couple posts on eatfeats about it? Oh, we fell for it!! Damn you Shea brothers, you tricked us, and look at the results…
Does it make sense then to not talk about things at all that you don’t like, because there could never be a change? Maybe the Sheas, having read all these posts, have already made some changes to better the eaters. Look at the Krystals payouts, higher, and out to another eater. Look at the results, although still late in posting, they are recording everyone’s totals now. Yes, there is much more to be done, but if no one says anything, they aren’t going to know about it.

I don’t believe that’s true. The Shea’s are smarter than that. Truth is, they’re busy guys. Shea Communications is a full time PR firm, with dozens of clients. The IFOCE is just one of many things on their plates. To suggest that they’re INTENTIONALLY underperforming and mismanaging their clients’ money is a bit of a stretch.

Thanks, Kevin, Mike, Rhonda, and anonymous. Mike – I said it was good pizza for the area, but hopefully there *IS* better pizza in the area. Twenty years ago (I’m getting really OLD) when I was finishing my first college tour in Erie (PSU – The Behrend College), the quality of pizza in the area was dismal. Fresh dough – hand-tossed pizza, which we had for years in Harrisburg, was a novelty. Plain pizza meant a pre-baked crust with tomato sauce and NO cheese – cheese was a topping !?!. (You Philly guys would call that tomato pie – and you eat it cold {here comes a fight} 😉 )
I’m glad to see things have improved.

Carey – you’re right, they do have grated cheese on them – but not melted mozz like a pizza would have. I just don’t understand the fascination with them. You talk to people that grew up in Philly and the ‘burbs and mention tomato pie, and they get this dreamy, glassy-eyed stare as they think about it. But then again… everybody that likes pizza (or a variant) has a special one that they would go out of their way to get. My fiance’s brother was in the area two weeks ago from North Carolina and ordered 50 pizzas, par-baked, from Franzones in Conshohocken to take back with him

  32. Carey said

Maria’s is the best in Conshy. As far as the glassy looks, that is because of something you have to grow up eating it to get. It is like a cheese steak. The way we talk about them, people get disappointed when they finally get one, like it is the best thing in the world, but most of the appeal is the memories of having them as a kid.
