thegianthamburger.net offers $1000 reward
TheGiantHamburger.net sells a mail order giant burger kit which includes a big bun and other equipment. The 10 pounds of ground beef needed to make the patty are not included. A prize of $1000 is being offered to an eater who can submit a video of the assembled burger being finished in under an hour without any assistance.

That’s ridiculous. 10 pounds of ground beef, not to mention all those toppings in under an hour? If someone can do that I’LL give them $1,000. That’s at least as 12 pound burger (cooked weight) and Denny’s gives you three hours to do it!

Can ifoce eaters complete this contest?

Yeah, that’s probably about a 15-lbs burger, trimmings and all. Even if someone “could” do that, I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.

ifoce banned restaurant challenges. you eat this at home, yes?
KevinRoss said

No, you haven’t found a loophole there mad stork
I would venture to say they’d be far MORE against doing this at home with no safety measures than in a public setting. Besides, the challenge sounds impossible anyway. . .I don’t think they expect to pay anyone 1,000 bucks.

I think the email was meant for people who received it only, not to quote and repost to public forums. But it really doesn’t matter what the email said because I know they don’t endorse online contests, so a mailorder contest would seems no different.

You should probably adhere to the spirit of the law rather than just the letter of the law.
Mad Stork said

tell that to a lawyer. when I heard the ifoce supposedly banned restaurant challenges in the “interest of the eaters” for “safety”, that was it. again, the top guys should probably blindly follow it but anyone 20 and above wake up

I don’t think the top ranked eaters are “blindly” following the rule. They’re following it for very good reasons: because the IFOCE and competitive eating is a great source or income for them. As evidenced by OJ’s 2006 money list — where did it go? — many eaters made $20,000, $25,000, even $30,000 dollars last year. If I were pulling down that kind of dough, I’d be willing to make a few sacrifices too.
Agree however that the rule impacts lower ranked eaters more, for various reasons. But that’s all part of being a ranked eater on the pro circuit!

Don’t forget about travel expenses though in factoring in how much dough these people actually made. But of course, they can write off a lot on taxes as well to help taper it some (if they decide to pay taxes on their earnings). So it’s gotta be significantly less than the money lists would make one believe. . .I think the only person that is making real good money is kobe because people more often pay him to endorse products, commercials, appearances, and all that.

youre probably overstating travel expenses. washington dc to ny is what, $100, san diego to ny is a couple hundred. sure it varies but its probably safe to say they keep a lot from their winnings even after travel is factored in

Well; it was about 250 bucks just for me to go from CA to TX – and that was the cheapest rate I could find and it was well in advance. So San Diego to NYC has got to be way more than a couple hundred I’d imagine. Though I’m not an experienced flyer. Then there is hotel rooms, touristy things if you stay in the area, extra food costs , etc. Not to mention opportunity costs. Of course with the top eaters they are still profiting plenty to make it worth it. I was simply trying to say it is somewhere less than whatever you’d arrive at by adding up the prize money they’ve won. But heck, I think it’d be awesome just to win enough prize money to break even. Seeing the country and having fun experiences for free would be awesome. But honestly, it’s fun to do even when you spend money.
It would be a lot better to live on the east coast for these things of course, since it seems much more events are on that side of the country and travel expenses would be greatly lessened.

Do you honestly believe the top IFOCE eaters are paying their own way? That is not how it works. The top three or four IFOCE eaters have their travel expenses covered. It is a perk, which they deserve for the amount of money the IFOCE makes off of them. Without great eaters there would be no MLE, IFOCE, AICE or any of the other newly formed organizations. They deserve to be taken care of. A smart business always takes care of its best empoyees and such is the case in IFOCE.

Does Joey Chestnut Sonya Thomas or any other top MLE pay your salary , your bills or your rent? Start thinking in those terms before you continue onward with your cheering section for these people while you get shit in return

What the heck are you talking about? Why would any of those people owe anyone anything? The best get more because they are better and deserve it. You sound like a commie to me when you talk like that
Or at least very bitter.

Top performances of competitive eating’s elite have spillover and multiplier effects for the entire sport and everyone involved — as they absolutely must and should. Mediocre hitters in baseball or so-so wide receivers in football are not rewarded with top benefit packages; earnings and perks are performance-based in any viable sport, vocation, or line of work.
One of the posts that I felt put everything in perspective on this, about a year ago, was when Erik “The Red,” stated something to the effect of, “Those people deserve the perks they get. I hope some day I’m as good as them.” That really hit home with me.
When ANY person sets a standard that others notice, even the “losers” (bad term — those that didn’t set it) win, simply by association of being a part of the competitive eating as a whole. Previous outstanding performances by others, which were previously overlooked, are suddenly examined with appreciation and are no longer taken for granted.
The top performers are competitive eating’s money-makers; they elicit interest; they draw the crowds, and therefore command appropriate compensation. While it may be heroic that Rhonda Evans, for example, qualified for the Nathan’s finals with a personal best 21 hot dogs, the average viewer could not care less; he or she wants to see American hero Joey “Jaws” Chestnut wage war with the great Takeru “The Tsunami” Kobayashi on Coney Island. That same person wants to see a 100-lbs female phenom hold her own against much bigger male adversaries or eat 46 dozen oysters in 10 minutes.
So before anyone rattles his or her sabre and shouts choice words proclaiming inequitable treatment among eaters, I say be damn glad that a few people have stepped up to the plate and smacked home runs for the sport; they have earned everything they get! And in an indirect, but more than miniscule way they ARE putting food on other eaters’ plates.
I hope I never live to see the day when competitive eaters are a league of “ordinary” gentlemen, talent-wise. Because if that moment comes, it signifies that the homers have stopped.

Note: In my previous post I am simply using my own name in association with the hot dog as an example. Actually, I would be lucky to beat William Perry in a competition.

Awesome post Ronda…..
The entire discussion illustrates the differnces between IFOCE and AICE.
While the IFOCE only “takes care of” those eaters who are providing the excitement and drama, AICE manages to survive while “taking care of” more eaters.

There have been quite a few IFOCE members that have reaped the benefits from sponsors in the past years . Some have gotten more than they deserve and still bitch. The ones that usually have nothing but positive things to say about the Shea’s and the IFOCE are the ones that had the luxury of experiencing first class hotels and all the little fringe benefits that came along with that. Can you blame those eaters for blasting anyone that comes on this site with negative things to say abou the IFOCE? Hell no. They had it good. In my entire IFOCE career i was offered one paid trip which i had to turn down because it required a 4am flight with two changeovers. I was told to take anything they give you but cmon lets get real ok. I think because i dared to turn down a freebie i was never offered anything since then . While some feel Vegas and alka seltzer were owed to them i appreciated the offer from the Shea’s which to this day was essentially the only prize money i ever earned from the organization .Dont get me wrong im not trying to come off like a whining little bitch but instead trying to make a point . The lesser known or mid ranked eaters have never experienced the so called “good life ” from the IFOCE sponsors. Tell you what,if i had to do all over i wouild still hang in there with the IFOCE because i have aquired something from the good fans that money cant buy and that is RESPECT!
