Jason Fagone did not have open access to MLE eaters like Ryan Nerz did. His attempts to get inside scoops on Kobayashi were hampered completely by his not getting a good translator. So even though he traveled to Japan, he didn’t know how to communicate properly with Koby. You have to understand the culture too, and he didn’t have that. You can’t write a good book without real inside information.

Esophagus was a pretty well written piece of work but keep in mind fangone had little to work with as far as material because major league eaters were warned to take the 5th or else . If George gave the green light the book would have reached much higher plateaus
