George Shea is hand picking 5 IFOCE contestants for Wing Bowl and thats it. Everyone else is Philly locals. Ranked eaters from Philly don’t count under this rule and will have to qualify. Kobe is rummored to be in it.

They’re giving away a car for winning and top Philly eater. So if a Philly eater wins he/she gets 2 cars.

Some of the details were just announced – 5 IFOCE eaters will be chosen by George Shea – they do not need to qualify. 20 local eaters will need to do an eating stunt to qualify. Winner of the event overall wins a Suzuki Grand Vitara. The top local eater will win a Suzuki SX-4. If a local eater wins overall, they take home both cars. WIP already stated that Humble Bob will not be selected by George Shea, and will be in after a qualifying stunt, probably using hamburgers. Cataldi is claiming that Humble Bob is the only local professional eater – I guess he ignored Steakbellie, Wing Kong, Philly Guy, Arturo Rios, and myself.

I’m not an eligible eater… Damn 21 rule again. I called at 5:15am just to get shut down. The reasoning is some law makes it so you have to be 21 to win a prize so big (2 cars). So I’ll be taking applications to be in your posse starting today.

George Shea picking 5 eaters. Bertoletti, Sonya, Crazy Legs, Lefevre , Simpson. This contest is a joke and the politics surrounding the event gets worse every year. I suggest noone follow or pay any attention to this farce

When the IFOCE stuck their two cents into this in 2004 , the whole concept was ruined. In prior years anyone could have qualified for the event. . Jarvis , Booker & Hardy did make the event exciting in the two years they competed but does everyone agree that a chestnut locust 2 snoozer is not really very much to get excited over.

The only fair way to pick the eaters is to do like they did for the Open: draw out 5 names from a hat from the top 25 or so. And then they should all simply refuse to go to this side show.

    Don “Moses” Lerman also had a #2 & #3 finish before 2004.

If I read it correctly, it looks like WIP will pick the eaters. And in the piece, Wing Bowl is being advertised as “Philly vs the World,” and talks about how Joey and Rich trounced the locals last year. That really sets up the scenario with a NEW local hero, since Wingador is retired: Humble Bob.

Therefore, if Humble Bob goes, he might as well get a ride to Matt Blatt’s to pick up his new car. I’m not saying that another IFOCE eater wouldn’t possibly beat Humble Bob, but the odds would certainly be stacked against him.

(Incidentally, I’m not saying Bob wouldn’t do a great job, because he’s one of the best in the world!)

I seriously doubt that Sonya will be chosen, out of respect for her safety (assuming the promoters care.) If she is selected, she would be most wise NOT to attend, as she would probably like to live another year or two.

Bob tried to do a proposal with grapes this morning and they really gave him beef or it and shut him down. So it seems like they want the Philly side to lose.

    AICE not allowed Sucks!

TBK, you also live outside the listening area. Still, it’s funny that AICE is specifically mentioned in the rules. Apparently IFOCE is the only way for out-of-towners to get in. And even then you have to be one of the golden boys and/or girls (or however Tim identifies himself now) that gets picked. Here’s a question: could local IFOCE eaters still enter or would the Sheas not approve that?

Here is the part about organizations in the Wing Bowl rules:
    http://610wip.com/wingbowl/wingbowlrules.html

Wing Bowl 15 is an IFOCE officially sanctioned and sponsored event, any member of non-IFOCE professional eating organizations, including but not limited to AICE, are not eligible to participate in the contest. IFOCE members not chosen to receive an automatic bid into Wing Bowl 15 that are residents of the Philadelphia area are eligible to attempt an eating stunt or participate in a WIP sanctioned wing eating event to obtain entry into Wing Bowl 15.

If it’s IFOCE sanctioned and sponsored, then the IFOCE should be dictating the rules and officiating the competition, but they don’t. The IFOCE is simply a figurehead, a Queen Elizabeth if you will, whose name is being used to give the event credibility as an “official” competitive eating. It’s a sad state of affairs, but the hunger for money seems to rule the day.

The IFOCE is no worse than any other business in trying to make a buck. In a way, I don’t blame them. Maybe I would do the same thing. I’d like to think not, but I don’t know. I just feel sorry for the non-IFOCE and non-local eaters. And that’s coming from a person who is pro-IFOCE.
