Kobayashi fails to break Guinness pizza record
update Nov 15 The Brooklyn Eagle has an article with quotes from George Shea.
Kobayashi has a blog entry about his record attempt.
CBS New York reports that Takeru Kobayashi failed to break the Guinness pizza record. His time of 2:03 to eat a 12 inch was 18 seconds off of the record of 1:45.
update In a New York Daily News article, Kobayashi says the pizza’s poor condition contributed to his failing to break the record.
Gothamist has some pictures.
Examiner has an interview with Kobayashi. According to the interview, Kobayashi’s return to the IFOCE in 2011 does not appear likely.
Japanes sports website Sponichi Annex has an article about Kobayashi’s record attempt.

I thought Pat Bertoletti had the record of 12 inch pizza, which was less than a minute. Unless there are certain guidelines to the which Guinness abide by,type of pizza, crust thickness or having to clear your mouth before putting another slice in,etc. Bertoletti finished a 12 inch pizza in 49 seconds 2 years ago, to which I believe he was awarded the record.

If Kobayashi doesnt rejoin the ifoce in 2011 it’s because hes dodging the great Bob Shoudt.

I agree. Every pizza is a bit different. The hardest ones for me are the ones with a hard outer crust. I saw Bertoletti and Joey eat about 4 pies each on youtube. That was between 8 and 12 mins (granted probably much “lighter” pies). So on average that could have been around 2:30 per pie. My guess is that since both were 12 inch pies they were much different. That is one thing i like about the records at MLE. They are usually set by the specific event. Corn beef at one event for example might not be directly compared to corned beef at another event. Talk about food variance, i never ate 2 wings of the same size.

Bob Shoudt? It wouldn’t be because Joey is a little bit better than Kobayahsi would it? Not sure Bob Shoudt is the first person that Kobayashi is thinking about avoiding that is all. Although as fast as CE is growing, it wouldn’t surprise me if a few eaters have surpassed Kobayashi in their eating abilities.

Heathens repent; those messengers for satin will lead you to a land of suffering. They use the good fortunes of a few to lure the unknowing and the willing to a table of despair. You get some shiny trinkets to show for a job well done while the messengers from satin reap the rewards. Some have seen the light and have broken their bond with the evil doers. Follow them to a table of good and purity

If you morons didn’t know what actually was being said,
Heathens repent; those messengers for satin (ifoce) will lead you to a land of suffering. They use the good fortunes of a few to lure the unknowing and the willing to a table of despair. You get some shiny trinkets (worthless trophies) to show for a job well done while the messengers from satin reap the rewards (millions from casinos and other non food entities). Some (Kobi, Boone, Larue) have seen the light and have broken their bond with the evil doers. Follow them to a table of good and purity

Fickle fans. It is interesting to read the various interviews. The one with the most information is The Examiner. Kobayashi is going to English school. It seems as if the pizza did not stick to the fork as he expected. That is what the too soft meant. There is a difference between explaining and making excuses. He apparently begged to be given the opportunity to try again but was told no. Of course, this depends totally upon believing anything you read, see, hear. Everyone including me looks for things which fit with our pre-conceived and firmly held beliefs and is likely to ignore the rest. Every eater has been burned one way or another by the “press”, things taken out of context or things written with a strong bias. Sonya remains my favorite eater, I do like seeing women compete alongside the men, I have been a fan of Kobayashi’s since first meeting him when he was unknown in this country and blew everyone away at Nathan’s. I have not changed my opinion of his eating abilities and his character since that time. He still is the eater who has come closest to beating Joey at Nathans.

To Give Me a Break: I want to believe Anonymous was being facetious, since Bob Shoudt has never come close to equalling Koby … ever. Yet, somehow, Bob was ranked ahead of Koby the last time Koby was ranked.
To We Have Seen the Light: If the IFOCE members are truly messengers of satin, where the hell are the silk garments they should be delving out to contest winners?
Rona: Good one! You made me laugh! 🙂
I have to defend Koby here. He does not routinely eat with a knife and fork—-who eats pizza that way?—- just like none of you (except Sonya and Juliet, perhaps) routinely eat with chopsticks.
If anybody thinks Koby is rationalizing his reasons for not breaking the pizza record using a knife and fork, consider this: The next time there’s a noodle, gyoza, sushi, clam, oyster, or rice contest do any of you think any male MLE eater would stand a ghost of a chance against Koby, Sonya, or Juliet if it was stated in the rules that participants must use chopsticks?
I think not.

As discussed throughout these comments, no two pizzas are alike, which is what makes duplicating this world record attempt impossible.

“As expected, Guinness has very, very specific rules for the anyone attempting to set the 12″ pizza record:
â– Pizza must weigh at least 348 grams (12.27 oz) and be 12″ in diameter
â– Crust should be heavier than 150 grams, precooked
â– Pizza must have at least sauce and cheese
â– Pizza must be eaten with a knife and fork, but can be precut”

Good info Stephanie. I only know that Pat is the Gold Standard when it comes to speed-eating pizza. I doubt that Koby or Joey is faster than Pat in the first 2 or 3 minutes, though they might (Joey has) catch him after 8 minutes or so.

chopsticks the right tool for oysters, maybe for some. small fork with head close to plate seems fastest. i prefer just slurping it off the shell. chopsticks are great, wouldn’t use them for chicken wings. since traditionally oysters and clams off the halfshall are youtinely eaten without any tools, i don’t see why there would be any restrictions to just using ones hands. damn why am i thinking about clams and oysters. i need a fix.

Thanks for clearing that up Stephanie,I didn’t see that article at the time. The conditions of the pizza play a huge factor, I wonder if Guiness monitors how long the pizza sits before being served, even room temperature pizza is hard to eat at a fast pace. I’m going to order some now.

I agree with Rhonda. I don’t think Pat has ever lost a pizza eating contest.
Rhonda, I think he always wins because he is universally recognized as having the fastest hands in competitive eating. I think Pat would have crushed this record.

I think it is fun to read all of the different articles which spin things, often with hyperbole. The Master of Hyperbole is George. Again, Nathan’s is a long way away. If Kobayashi reads that George is saying that the era of Kobayashi has passed, who knows what fires will be stoked in his belly. Careful Rhonda, I think Don Lerman has “fastest hands in competitive eating” on a t-shirt. I always thought that was a clever statement. I learned only recently that while images can be copyrighted, using text as images cannot. So Robert Indiana’s “Love” image was never allowed to be copyrighted, and he never received any royalties from any of his “word” images. Credit to Don for his ideas, you cannot copyright a statement.

Rhonda, I apologize for neglecting to proof read my text. I must have been having a boone moment, it should have been strict. But you’ll have to agree with the numerous variations of the offerings and the weight by eye calculations, ifoce “world” records are just that -ifoce records.

Duh … I apologize. I was in a foul mood yesterday —— on the rag. But I slapped the shit out of my boyfriend last night, so I feel better now.
I don’t mean to be a wordsmith. I make a lot of grammatical/spelling eroors myself —-see!
I do understand where you’re coming from. The IFOCE records are exactly that, IFOCE records. However, the records were accomplished by eaters who adhered to a set of standards, though loosely enforced.
I would go on to say that if you think someone else can outeat Joey in dogs or Sonya in oysters, as an example, I’d sure love to watch the attempt.
