The Wing Bowl has had it’s day. Reporters and now even most of the public recognize this event as a boring drunk fest, featuring sleezey strippers, second tier eaters and the same old crap. In the day, this event would sell out quickly, and now they are still trying to get people to buy tickets.

Do u realize how hard it is to sell out anything, even in a major city in this economy, ON A FRIDAY MORNING!?! Its hard enough on a Tuesday night, or even a Sat. at noon, but a FRIDAY MORNING!??

Nathan’s is on the 4th of July, when EVERYONE has off. No one has off on a a random Friday morning.

1,000 people on a friday am is incredible. 20,000+ is insane.

Claiming that it’s on a Friday morning is no excuse in explaining away why ticket sales have slowed. Uing the economy as a scapegoat doesn’t fly because the ticket price isn’t goint to break anyone’s budget. And if more people are out of work, being on workday shouldn’t be a problem. The February 4, 2005 Wing Bowl was on Friday and it sold out in less than a day. Come on man face it. Wing Bowl had its run, but it has become a boring and embarrassing demonstration of public drunkeness that has been done before. In addition, most see it as a further reminder that the Eagles blew it. There’s nothing new this year. People aren’t lining up to see Second Tier Squib, Has Been El Wingador, and some Canadian who got his ass kicked recently by Kobi. In 2005 it was page one news in Philly, this year it’ll be lucky to make the paper. And as for national attention, that went away with the top national eaters.

The 2005 Wing Bowl was free. 2006 was the first year tickets were required.

For the sake of argument i’ll agree on everything. However, a one day artificial sell-out & an eventual sell-out (500 short) is the same thing. BTW tix cost twice as much as then.
U may be right & wrong at the same time on coverage. With media affiliations, some stations, newspapers won’t cover it at all, others will feature it &/or put it on the front page.

National attention was never significant for WB. Additionally, it doesn’t need to be. It only needs to be huge locally, unless a national sponsor jumps on board. (Unlikely for local am radio)

The biggest factor for 2005 WB being as big as it was…The Eagles were in the freakin s&perbowl. It was more of a pep rally for those that couldn’t make it down for the big game.

The wing bowl is still going to be a good contest without Chestnut & bertoletti. It may even be better because it is not so predictable. Let’s break it down: Squibb, El Wingador, Furious Pete, Joel the Cannon, US MALE, Brad the Lunatic, Gentleman Joe. Looks like any of the 7 can win this.

As for selling out, tickets are $10 each. Not many people want to pay for tickets let alone $10, even though the money goes to a great charity. As Joe said, 20,000 or 17,000, it is still a great turnout.

@Jumped The Shark- U sound like a pissed off washed up frat boy whos hatin on the game cause u cant hang with the big dogs. @WIP- Props to Squibb for even mentioning buyin tix for it off air. Hes doin his part to sell the event out. More than the rest of these guys Im sure. Btw, what is this crap about a Wingadore & Kobi doin a cheesesteak contest? Has any body even seen the video of REIGNING champ Squibb killin the TONY LUKE’S 5 LB? Let Kobi try that! I dont understand why every body is always trashin that kid. He kills it and hes NOT a pro. @Gentleman Joe- I dont know why ur even tryin to make sense of this guy. Hes a douche bag. Get a life @Jumped The Shark.

If Wing Bowl is “over” why are so many states trying to copy it? Boston, Texas – WIP and Philly started the first wing contest of that size. Theres no reason to explain to this guy why there are tickets left. Hes is prob just some MLEer who is embarassed to sign in as himself and smack talk so he made up a name. Some people are happy to know they need to get them before theyre gone. Im glad he said something about tickets. I got mine today. Id hate to try and get them last minute. I didnt realize its in a week or so. Hundreds of thousands of people are going. People who already got their tickets. They must think watching “a second tier” go for the crown again is worth getting up or staying up for. I do. I cant wait to see the kid squash every body. I saw the video of Tony Luke’s 5 LBer. Its sick!! I wish I had his capacity.

That Shark kid is right. The 2005 Wing Bowl did sell out in 24 hours. Today interest in the Wing Bowl has waned. The only people willing to defend it are the wannabe, second tier eaters and hanger-ons who can’t compete with the likes of Chestnut and hang on to what the the bowl was in their desperate hope for their 15 minutes. According to OJRifken the 2005 tickets were sold out in October even before the Eagles were slotted for the Super Bowl. This year it’s January and they can’t give them away. As for other cities doing Wing Bowl it’s a good idea. But in Philly it’s been played. See EFEATS:

Wing Bowl 14 sells outOctober 26, 2005 at 12:58 am by ojrifkin · More posts about:Philadelphia, Wing Bowl
WIP 610 has announced that the Wing Bowl has sold out in a little more than 24 hours despite the lack of previous competitors.
Update 10/26 11:26 pm philly.com has more information about Wing Bowl ticket sales (go to the bottom of the page). 18,000 tickets were sold, which is probably about the capacity for basketball or hockey.

I think that there is no such thing as a second rate or “second tier” eater!! These are the guys who are willing to compete for the love of it, For the bragging rights, For the fun. The $50,000 in prizes is nothing to turn your nose up at either. I think that these MLE brats, these IFOCE spoild children, need to stop trying to ruine it for everyone! I am not a competitive eater by any means, but I am one of the people who is interested in it. If it wasn’t for people like me NO ONE would even hold these contests for you all to compete in in the first place. REMEMBER THAT the next time any of you try to open your mouth. The public takes great interest in watching people complete feats they only wish that they could. YOU ARE ALL like an NFL or NBA player- hot for the moment, maybe break a few records, but WILL eventually be replaced or out done. How dare you talk about each other and make reference to what the public wants. I understand that a lot of the trash talking is part of the game, but to say “second tier” competetiors are less than you and speak poorly of them is just bad sportsmanship. You aren’t competing so why take it there? I am part of the public and I WANT TO SEE WING BOWL reguardless of all of you protesting it.

Anna Nimity, no one’s stopping you or ruining it for you to pay 10 bucks and watch “second tier” eaters, drunks getting in fights, sad alcholics passing out and throwing up, racists throwing bottles and hurling racial slurs other Americans, women being verbally abused until they flash the crowd, and all the wonderful “sportsmanship” the Wing Bowl has become. That’s your right so have fun!

    Dear You Go Girl,
My point was people on here disrespecting the EATERS. If people were phased by the random degenerates who occasionally make their way in, they wouldn’t go or they would make a big fuss about it like you. This small group of individuals is a type that is anywhere you go. They were the 700 level at the vet. They are the meat heads in bars who drink to much & start fights. They are the guys juicing & throwing weights in the gyms. Wether they are drunk or not… They are all around you! Do you avoid the gym, sporting arenas, bars, :& restaurants? NO. So, stop pointing out the obvious, random occurances that happen in all walks of life. STOP calling these athletes “second tiers” :& go have that stick surgically removed from your butt. I look forward to not seeing you at Wing Bowl.
    Sincerely,
    Anna
