IFOCE Houston gyro contest May 17

(from Hangman comment) An IFOCE gyro eating contest sponsored by Niko Niko’s Greek American Restaurant will take place at the Festival of Greece in Houston, TX on May 17. The purse is $4000 and registration opens on Monday April 28 at noon eastern.

Results from Broadway at the Beach have yet to be posted on IFOCE.com. Beautiful Brian speculates that the lack of coverage could be due to dissatisfaction with Badlands Booker’s comeback.

Sorry to disappoint you Rhonda, I said, is not me.

It does look as though someone was trying to simulate me, with the dollar signs for the brothers, the dot dots & the exclamation/question marks.

I don’t even understand what that poster is talking about.

    I don’t believe I’ve been that negative in…years?!?

Actually, Coondog suggests the dollar signs, when I was running speedeat.

I don’t claim to own the dollar signs, dot dots or exclamation/question marks, its just my style of writing.

SyKo I don’t know who will be there, but I would be glad to assist in conjecturing about it. 🙂

You know Joey and Pat will be there. They both still have something to prove to themselves and the world. It’s not so much about money with them, as they have won/are winning/receiving ample coin.

Don’t expect Sonya, since she has stated she is going to avoid many breaded/dunking foods. Also, with Joey and Pat both picking up first and second money in virtually all contests they attend, Sonya’s third or fourth place money would not be enough compensation.

Eater X might be there, but I doubt it. Again, he wouldn’t be able to finish in the top two and travel is cost-prohibitive–same for Crazy Legs, Humble Bob, Hall Hunt, and Juliet Lee.

Rich LeFevre is a wild card. He may well just pop up. He won a million Trip Rewards points in a cake-eating contest several years ago, and he might have some left with which to redeem for airfare/hotel costs. Rich is FIERCELY competitive and he will take on all comers. He’s like that little chihuahua on the block who would just as soon take on the big, bad Rottweiller, as he would the neighbors’ dachshund.

After that, it’s just you and some locals.

I hope this helps out SyKo … even if it doesn’t it was a good catharsis for me and it was fun! 🙂

I think gyro is short for gyroscope. I don’t know how someone would eat that unless it is Mr. Roboto from Japan.

a Gyro (pronouced year-o,yes i had to ask, lol) is a greek food, its got meat (lamb usually) maybe some tomato slices, maybe some onions and its in this pita style bread pocket, you usually put this white sauce on it (im not sure what the sauce is though) they are actually pretty tasty, just the meat is a little tough to chew and the bread is kinda thick, its going to be interesting cause i dont see huge numbers being done, but you never know with Joey,Pat,Bob,Sonya and those guys ,they are eating machines.i’m more of an eating push mower,i can get the job done its just gonna take all day, haha – okay Anonymous 4:33pm and 4:34pm (probaly the same person,no i have turned over a new leaf after talking to my good friend US MALE,:) right now my life is great so i dont want to make God mad, cause when i do he teaches me a lesson or two,and then i have to tell myself well if i didnt do that ,then he wouldnt have done this ,to show me the light) – Fountain said 6:02pm – im not sure what you mean by that statement, but for me Bob is one of the nicest people i have met in CE. in fact it was him and Joey that i reached out to before i was ever in my first event and they both could of chose not to answer me back, but they both did and Bob has been very helpful for me in CE,he always takes the time to answer all of my stupid questions and is just an all around nice guy,i like talking to him,hes a smart guy too….and since im like the only Houston eater that i know of right now, what other people in Houston are there do disagree anyway??? – no offense but the people that would bad talk Bob or Sonya must not really know them, dont believe everything that is written on the web, look at me for example here im a total smart-ass,but in real life im like the nicest due that would do anything to help out a fellow eater, cause thats what the big names did for me at my first couple events.you gotta pay it foward ya know – Have A Nice Day 🙂

This is definitely a food you should try before the contest. They are tasty, but the pita can be thick and hard to swallow. The sauce is called tzatziki, made of yogurt. Pretty mild tasting. I don’t think this is a food that you will get sick of eating in a contest. I also don’t think the meat will be tough to eat, a lot of the gyros made by vendors use a spicy lamb and beef mix that is ground very fine, made into a solid form, and sliced after cooking.

This should be a fun one. I would assume that they are not fully loaded and just include pita bread and sliced lamb from a spit. That sauce is tzatiki, it usually includes, cucumber, lemon, salt, pepper, and mint. A fully loaded gyros is a thing of beauty, w/ or without feta, tomatoes n onions. It’s another midnight/ greek diner staple.
