So the bowl itself has a volume of 16 ounces but the kale inside of it did not weigh 16 ounces. Very misleading totals and reporting by MLE.

If Jim Reeves can allow Gioia to finish ahead of him he should rethink his future with MLE

Insane capacity, more than Chestnut’s 24 poutines (16oz). And in only 8 minutes, not 10! Kale might be a go-to food to set such records?

Veggies are really the best. Eating veggies have many advantages for competitive eaters. Veggies are healthy, they are low in calories, and they aren’t frowned upon by PETA or related groups. Veggies are win-win-wimn!

I assume now that Mike Splendore passed the standard mc training course with requirements limited to looking and sounding like the Shea brothers,. he is prohibited from associating with non IFOCE members such as Molly etc or reporting events which are not sanctioned by the IFOCE

Hey emcee and eaters, this is really terrible. You’ve established by error a record that will never be broken because it was impossible to achieve in the first place. A 16-fluid-ounce container contains 16 ounces of something WHEN IT’S FILLED WITH WATER. When you fill it with a handful of leaves, it weighs as much as the container itself, the few ounces of leaves you’ve placed inside of it, and the air in between the leaves, which – wait for it – WEIGH NOTHING!!! Nobody ate even close to 24 pounds of anything at this contest, yet because of stupidity, naïveté, and selfishness, guys are being credited with feats they don’t have the talent to accomplish. Giving them this much credit is a huge disservice to real champions past and present, and it shows how little MLE cares about honesty and about how inexperienced some of its people are. I’m disappointed that no one stopped these numbers from being publicized – disappointed in the eaters and the emcee. They should all have more integrity, common sense, and curiosity in things that don’t make sense.

@435 I think you are looking at this the wrong way. The results are 16 oz. bowls of kale salad. If you were to go into a deli with a salad bar you can choose an 8 oz., 16oz., 32oz. Etc. container. It doesn’t mean that’s the weight of what is inside it – it means it is a container of that volume. Assuming they made sure the bowls were consistent – I don’t see why you should get so worked up. They looked pretty full from the video.

I would love to sit in during a MLE MC classroom training session. George Shea probably has one of those blackboard pointer sticks with a piece of chalk while Mike the student diligently listens to Professor Shea . “Remember competitive eaters are viable athletes meant to be taken seriously. Never attempt to sully your reputation as an mc for MLE or you will besmirch the honor of all eaters’ Is that understood”? You will be provided with one straw hat one brooks bros sportjacket , slacks and script you must follow like the bible . Make sure you use my repetitive corny lines each time you take the stage EX “This eater remembers what he ate for lunch on March 3 1985″ When the contest ends be dramatic ” “Oh lord i just felt a knot in my stomach might have to go the emergency room”

Please, the emcee is a rookie just getting his feet wet on stage and will make rookie mistakes. Take Ryan Nerz for example. In his first ever emcee he had no idea what the fuck he was doing crediting wrong eaters with wrong titles and pronouncing everyone name wrong yet he went on to become one of the greats. Keep in mind here is a guy Mike who started out as an awestruck fan of Badlands Booker and Tim Janus but had to twist his buddy’s arm to be part of his podcast . It became such a huge hit that the Sheas caught wind to it and immediately signed him up as a reserve emcee . Lets just hope he doesn’t have to wait 6 months to get paid for his services

@4:35, to be correct MLE never stated the quantities in pounds. The totals were stated using 16 oz containers as the unit of measure. It’s your fault if you incorrectly infering each container actually weighed 16 oz.

  20. EffOliPie said

Isn’t kale like 99..44% water anyway? If they packed it in, it should weigh the same. That’s my opinion.

  21. Anonymous said

    July 11, 2016 @ 1:39 am

If MLE reported each container as 16 ounces, then the contents of each container was 16 ounces. Stop trying to take away from how great these guys did. Joey Chestnut wouldn’t have eaten as much as they did

  22. Anonymous said

@josh and 10:12 How do you think some idiot skimming MLE’s website or press release is going to report these results, or how do you think some idiot reading a story about this contest reported by an idiot reporter will interpret these results? They will assume that a 16-oz bowl means a bowl filled with 16 ounces of kale. What MLE should have done and should still do is approximate how many ounces of kale were in each bowl (ex. 2) and then convert those bowl totals into mass totals. Essentially that’s what MLE does with wings when they convert from one obscure unit (wings eaten) into a uniform unit (pounds of meat eaten). This could still be done at the office by the emcee.

Kale is 84% water (H₂O)! And 1 cup chopped (67g) has nearly 700% of your daily vitamin K allowance. ❦ Eat it every day! ☀ ❂ ✼

  29. Anonymous said

    July 11, 2016 @ 12:48 pm

So best case scenario based upon what “Veggies are best” said is that Gideon ate 25.5 X 67 = 1709 grams = 60 ounces of kale (less than 4 lbs.). That’s how MLE should have reported the results.

  30. Veggies are best ☺ said

    July 11, 2016 @ 1:17 pm

No, 16 oz is 2 cups, not 1! So you have to double ⑵ it. Oji consumed nearly a year’s worth of vitamin K (K for kale!)

    684% ❅ 25.5 x Չ = 348.84 days of vitamin K. If Oji is a standard USDA person (he is TALL).

  31. anonymous said

    July 11, 2016 @ 1:25 pm

Wrong 30.26 minus the variable of 005% based on molecular H2O . Suffice to say its 60oz less than -4lbs

  32. Food And Math said

    July 11, 2016 @ 1:55 pm

Oji is 6 ft 9 in according to his official MLE bio (2.05 meters). The average US male is 1.763 meters, and the average US female is 1.622 meters. I don’t think the split is exactly 50-50 (men are procreated more, but die earlier, both in infancy and later), but for the sake of this approximation we’ll assume it. Cubing the ratio to get the volume, in terms of diet, Oji has requirements of 1.777 the average. So he’s only be able to go 196 days before his next vitamin K fix. If you factor in a higher metabolism rate than average too, maybe it’s not even 6 months.

@veggies You’re right about the cups. So double the total arrived at earlier, and he ate about 7.5 lbs.

Food and math has a point but factor in 3/4 centimeter ÷ weight and height of oji then multiply that amt by total weight of each bowl of kale and that will give you the correct totals of the winner

  39. Anonymous said

    July 11, 2016 @ 7:40 pm

If each bowl was two cups and not 16 ounces, that’s how MLE would have reported it. Because MLE instead reported that each bowl was 16 ounces, we know that’s how much was in each bowl

Here is the OFFICIAL result from MLE:

Gideon Oji, with a WR 25.5 16oz servings of Kale Salad in 8 min.

So they ARE “16oz servings of Kale Salad” that he ate 25.5 (WR).

  44. Dude said

On the Ojis stats it shows that they were 16oz bowls by volume NOT weight.

  45. OzNyPa said

    July 15, 2016 @ 5:31 am

“oz” (meaning ounces) is a unit of weight (mass), not volume. It literally means, 1/12 of a pound (Roman), but the modern thinkings ballsed it up to get 16 instead.
The correct term would be “fluid ounce” for volume (fl. oz.), but you can ONLY use that to measure liquid (not kale).
So it’s clear that “16 oz” by MLE implies serving weight.
