This is a tough one because there’s not a clear cut winner like there’s been in year’s past or a lot of contenders. Mongo, Wing Kong and Flash are definitely the front runners this year. All three candidates qualified for Coney. That’s a feat in itself for a rookie. If you look at HDBs, Mongo beats them both with his 30 to Gordon’s 26 and Kong’s 23. In terms of experience since last July 4, Kong wins with 6 IFOCEMLE contests, followed by Mongo (2) and Gordon (1).

If you want to whittle it down based on who comes closest to qualifying as a true rookie, Kong’s been competeing in IFOCEMLE events since 2006. So has Mongo (he took 2008 off according to the EatFeats database). Gordon is probably the truest rookie. His first pro IFOCEMLE contest was in spring 2008 (the ShooFly contests he competed in and won in 06 and 07 were in the amateur round held before the pro contest).

Based on all of that, I’m still not sure who should get it, but I’m leaning toward Wing Kong based simply on his passion for the sport (judging by his total number of contest in the past year and beyond) and the potential I think he has. The fact that he’s got the lowest of the rookie HDB totals could hurt him though.

My pick is Juliet to defend. A third straight ROY nomination will be unprecendented. But honestly, none of the people listed are rookies, they all started in 2006 or before – in that case I am still a Rookie. Unless the implication is that making it to the Nathan’s finals is like making it to the big leagues and everything you did before that is like being in the minors.

I know it’s called something like “IFOCE Rookie of the year” but it has been a few years since a “rookie” on the circuit has won it. I think those who have won this the last couple of years have been rookies as far as qualifying for Coney Island. So is it “IFOCE (Nathan’s finals) Rookie of the year”?

About the prior experience of some of the ROY contenders. For Major League Baseball’s ROY award, candidates are allow to have a certain amount of major league experience prior to their rookie season. I think ROY candidates can’t have spent more than 45 days on a major league roster prior to their rookie year or have fewer than 150 at bats (50 innings pitched for pitchers, I think).

Applying the same thinking to CE, and assuming the “season” upon which ROY candidates are measured is the 12 month period between Nathan’s contests, how much prior IFOCEMLE experience should candidates be allowed to have? 5 contests? 10 contests?

As ridiculous as it may sound to some, I would actually not be shocked to see Juliet win ROY again.
