Leave APE alone. Some excellent eaters and fine people make up that organization.

Rhonda — For years, years, APE has been trying to demean MLE and its eaters here, in the media, and at events. The whole APE organization was formed out of bogus claims by team Kobayashi that MLE were horrible, contracting, slave drivers. “Free” Kobayashi was proved to be just lying to everyone about why he left MLE. He couldn’t handle not being number one. He even signed a “dreaded” contract with Hofmanns. Now, everyone is starting to recognize APE as bush league and its about time. APE was started as an attack on MLE and its eaters, too bad their attack was based a Kobayashi lie. I’m not attacking APE eaters, they’re probably fine people, but their eaters will never be as good as MLE talent. APE eater like Jamie McDonald, who will never get a chance to eat on the big stage of Nathan’s, must be hating life. Sure he’s making short term cash, but he’ll never make long term (Chestnut, MLE-Kobayashi, and Thomas) notability, which is what he truly craves.

Kobayashi had nothing to do with the founding of AICE/APE in 2004. See

Historian, yes, I actually read that on BB’s site. I remember it like it was only a few years ago. Actually, BB seemed sort of empathetic for the guy, I enjoyed reading BB’s take.

Correction, noted. You are right OJ. It appears, APE actually invented the bogus “contract” excuse for less-then-MLE-qualified to join APE. It provided a league for eaters that couldn’t make it in MLE, those that could never make it in the MLE, and yet, still be able to make claims of being a number one, two or three eater in a league of lesser talent. Kobayashi, saw that strategy, and his “Free Kobi” team tried to expand on it. It turns out now, as Kobi has learned, APE is a bad, non-sustainable business model for eaters and the league itself. Having no say on where an eater can eat and not eat, attracts very little interest by sponsors. I mean, what’s to stop an APE eater from eating pizza one day at a shop and eating against a rival pizza place the next day? Resulting in MLE has Nathan’s and Hooters and APE has Hamantashen Eating and Spring Break. And, with no sponsorship protections, APE’s contests are getting fewer and fewer.

It was an organization created out of hostility and revenge more than anything.. The tirade Chapman threw at Bens deli sealed its bad reputation

Even if the worst is true, it’s a new time—-Chowhound’s tirade, the fighting, the mud-slinging, the resentment. The vast majority of it is in the past. Sure, some hostility remains, but you have to move on for the welfare of everyone.
Nothing positive happens by reopening old wounds. That’s lose-lose. Why go that route when organizations of varying bylaws / dogmas / philosophies can still coexist without engaging in mean-spirited actions and rhetoric toward one another? That’s win-win, and it seems senseless to opt for the former, when the latter is available.

Actually the tirade the fighting, made for outstanding entertainment. Some of that even carried over to this site a few years later. Everything pisses that guy off . His sense of humor is very weak, You don’t get entertaiment like that any more in the sport

A contract is not dreaded. An unreasonable contract is.
Joe Flacco just signed a contract averaging over 20 million a yr, if the Ravens offered him…$100,000. a yr should he have taken it??
That is the likely comparison between what Kobi was offered & what he received. He owns a piece of a company! His own branded hot dog.
In the future replace contract with BAD contract, Unfair contract, Unreasonable contract.

Rhonda — It’s kind of hard to move on when on the eve of the formation of APE, founder Arnie Chapman, called Eric Booker a “slave” based on his affiliation with MLE. That’s the mentality of hatred the APE organization has towards MLE and its eaters. To this day, the APE organization, its eaters, and associates are continually trying to attack here, in the media, and at contests, the character, accomplishments and abilities of MLE eaters like Joey Chestnut and Sonya Thomas (I only single them out because they are the MLE male and female top eaters). Call APE’s motives jealousy, trying to make an easy buck off the hard work of others, or just ignorance, but APE is where you should look to for hostility. I understand that as the little guy APE may in the best light just trying to be provocative for attention MLE has earned through creating competitive eating as we know it. But, there are better ways for APE and its eaters to gain attention and as you say, “coexist.”

Some of you still dont get message after all these years. The contract protects the sheas in case you try to sue them in the event they throw you out for competing in non sanctioned events and for some reason you still think you should eat with MLE . Thats all

Gentleman Joe — Without MLE and Nathan’s, Kobayashi never would have had the chance of recognition to gain any contract with a company. But his appreciation was to leave those who helped him gain opportunity and needlessly bad mouth them and innocent eaters. Particularly galling when he just could of moved on and accepted he was no longer number one. Both parties could of parted amicably. How is Hoffman’s contract not “BAD,” “unfair,” and a “unreasonable?” Boy, owning part of Hofmann’s seems to be a real moneymaker. His own branded hot dog? Well they’re just flying off the shelf aren’t they. The fact is, now Kobi has more limited financial options and can get no events without authorization from Hofmann’s. His affiliation with Hofmann’s has so far been bad, unfair and unreasonable, yet you APE eaters have been so brainwashed that you will make up anything to put a bad situation on the evil MLE. I admire loyalty, but wake up dude.

Anon 3:55 is dead on. There’s a reason why there are so few loyal/reoccurring APE contests, because the sponsors get a taste of APE, see the results, and don’t like it. MLE’s contract, in my mind, satisfies two thing. 1) Protects the Sheas from lawsuits from Sponsors/Eaters. & 2) Allows them to ensure the sponsors that their brand will be protected for the money that they pay.
Sponsors main goal in establishing an eating contest of professional level is to push their brand (food) out to the public as a step above the rest. If a burger restaurant hosts a Burger or Pizza contests, but then in the months following all the “pro-eaters” are going around the country eating large Burger/Pizza challenges, the sponsorship loses it’s value. On the other hand, you talk to/ask any MLE eater about Hot Dogs, and the one word that comes out of their mouth is “Nathans”, Burgers (defunct, but) “Kyrstals”, Jalapenos, Tamales, Poutine, the list goes on. The only exception is Wings & ribs. That’s sponsor loyalty, and it’s invaluable, whether it’s forced or not.
In regards to Gen. Joe’s comment on unfair/unreasonable, there is no doubt that a contract such as MLE’s might be looked at as unfair or unreasonable To Some Eaters. There are definitely many eaters who would do better not being part of MLE, and vice-versa. That decision is up to the individual to decide, and those who make bad decisions will learn the hard way, but it should not reflect how people perceive MLE’s contracts as a whole.

In this social networking age, it is easier to market yourself than ever.

Hey 12:55, How exactly would Kobayashi have won a MLE run Nathan’s contest in the first place without MLE and Nathan’s? Yeah, Kobayashi’s doing a real great job of marketing himself. What has he done famous since Nathan’s? Name one, just one, of as significant as an event than his many years wiith MLE? Ask any top eater during his time with MLE and they wittnessed countless of times Kobi was coddled and given anything he wanted. Just like any spoiled child he thought he was better than than the sum. But, he got a real comeupance when Chestnut came along and he was no longer top dog. His ego couldn’t take it and went to play in his own sandbox, which followed years in the wilderness doing minor league baseball games, made up hot dog events against chumps, and semi-homoerotic videos. Then Hofmann’s comes along and they can’t do anything with the guy. When’s his next big bunless hofmann’s event against girlscouts? His public can’t wait.

The only eaters earning a decent income from major league eating is Joey Pat and maybe Sonya and Bob. The rest are ranked as a gimmick with no real monetary value attached to their names. Booker will pop up on stage every now and then and belt out a few rap tunes but that and $2.50 will get him on the subway. Check that, he rides for free. Maybe Miki Sudo will enter the elite 3 club and make this her full time job

One more thing 12:55, you really need to learn more about Kobayashi and competitive eating before you post here. I hope you’re not one of the Hofmann or “Free” Kobi team assigned to promoting Kobi because if so, he’s in real trouble. So let me get this straight here’s how Kobayashi could of become famous without Nathan’s or MLE. It’s the year 2000 and Kobayashi decideds he wants to become famous at competitive eating. First thing he does is invent Youtube. Then he comes up with the concept of creating a show to post on his Youtube. Then decides to hold a hot dog eating contest to post on his Youtube. The top IFOCE eaters hear of this magical invention, and suddenly decide not to eat at Nathan’s that year and eat at Kobayashi’s eating contest that he intends to post on his recently invented Youtube. Kobi beats the former worlds best eaters and millions around the world are drawn to watching him on his new Youtube. Yeah, Kobi’s famous! Sounds logical.

All the national companies survived and the local breweries and beverage makers went to to wayside primarily due to heavy advertising that they could not keep up with, IE coke Pepsi 7 up Canada dry ,Miller bud , the pubic got a brainwashing to drink and eat sh-t such as cola as apposed to cream or black cherry and other Delicious flavors ,Same goes for a Mc Donalds or burger king burger as apposed to a good luncheonette burger , Its the dumbingdown of American tastes simple as that,.
