CE News on Jed Donahue suspension / New Poll
CE News reports that “rumors” exist Jed Donahue will be suspended.
The new poll asks how much prize money in a non-IFOCE event would you need to risk an IFOCE ban if you were an IFOCE member ranked outside of the top 10.

“Rumors are swirling that Jed Donahue will soon be suspended.”????
Isn’t that the IFOCE’s news website. Why are they creating and reporting their own rumors?

Because they can

They aren’t starting the rumors, just reporting that the rumors are out there. The rumors started here. They, the IFOCE news site, are reporting on rumors that they read here, a non-IFOCE site. Then they say there will be an investigation. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

Rich Shea writes all those stories /editorials for the site. If they were dead serious about the suspension it would never be hyped or mentioned. I think these so called suspensions are carried out with little serious intent, but when sarcasm is applied to the editorial of the subject it’s hard to determine if they are fu–ng with us or they really mean it. Case in point Boone & Philbin suspension.

They want to make sure there isn’t any “Rush To Judgement” 😉

It does make sense Carey. Idont think the IFOCE would start a rumor just to start a rumor.

Should Jed be allowed to compete in that event? Yes. IS he allowed to compete in that event? As a contracted MLE eater, no.
If this is his first offense, a suspension may not be warranted. $2,500 is a lot of money though. More than he might win on the circuit with third or fourth place finishes. Though he has won $7,600 during his IFOCE career, so you can’t really make the case that it was worth risking his future in the IFOCE. Unless he was confident he could take this $2,500 and still keep eating in MLE contests even if he got caught. I’m guess the gamble will pay off and he’ll be able to keep on eating…one hot dog at a time.

Luther, it wasn’t IFOCE that started that rumor. It was Jake from SF who first said it looked like him, and from there, everyone on here spreading things. By the time it got to CE News, Jed has already been suspended, according to the rumors.

but the rumors were not about some “photo with a paid programming personality” were they?

IloveKevinRoss, what are you asking here? [but the rumors were not about some “photo with a paid programming personality” were they?]
the rumors were (at least on this site)
1. that the guy who won was Jed
2. He should be suspended (if it is him)
3. El Toro can’t even smoke a cigar
4. Kevin Ross is giving up his lucrative CE career to go into arm wrestling.
OK, granted, no one here said that he WILL get suspended, but alot of people read too much into what is being said here as it is. So to see all of this chatter about it, you can assume people are talking about him getting suspended, that is, if you are a news writer for a hack news site.

the story on the ifoce news site said the rumor and investigation surrounding jed were because of a “photo with a paid programming personality” but any jed rumors were because of the donut thing not some photo or is ponch the “paid programming personality”?

I are confused. At any rate, here’s how the intestigation should go down:
1. Compare donut contest photos and video to real life photos and video of Jed Donehue
2. Talk to Jed about why he appeared in the donut contest (oops, did I assume the outcome of Step 1?)
3. Take appropriate action and inform CE community of that action

Yeah, they are talking about Ponch. His last gig was for an infomercial about real estate in Florida. That was the dig on CE News was about.

i did not know that carey but it figures mr estrada is doing that but take work wherever one can find it. but doesnt the ifoce feel they can just come out and say jed is being investigated for eating in a non sanctioned contest? is this whole thing a joke to them (well of course it is but why not half-act legitimate since they want to be taken that way??)

MM, I couldn’t find any video or pics of him. Does anyone have any? Let’s put them on YouTube and Flickr or Photobucket, and post the links here to get the inverstigation rolling.
Or we could not really care either way. It is only Jed Donahue.

I don’t know where photos/video are. Just to be clear, I’m not trying to instigate an investigation, I’m just trying to simplify the situation because things tend to complicated on here. I’ve gone on the record as saying that I think Jed should not be punished for this, if it’s a first offense. That said, I’m also not sure how seriously the IFOCE views violations of the non-compete contract.
But it raises an interesting question: Should an eater who breaks his/her contract by participating in a non-IFOCE sanctioned event be punished LESS SEVERELY if that event is a simple restaurant challenge (no real prize at stake) versus an eater who participates in an event like this one (with a $2,500 prize)? Should there be a distinction?

Well, the restaurant challenges is more of a grey area, since it is hard to distinguish between an official challenge and simply eating a large meal (which is a normal thing for most of us to do, even if we didn’t compete in speed contests ever). The 2,500 dollar contest is pretty clear cut as something that is well out of bounds historically as it is a legit eating contest for a really nice prize. So I could only assume any sort of consequences would be greater for a well-publicized donut eating contest with a commercial interest vs. eating some giant burrito somewhere.
