“Eat the Meat” qualifier winner banned from finals
According to a recent email, the person in the gray shirt cropped out of the above two pictures was the top finisher in a recent qualifier for WPLR’s Eat the Meat II chicken wing contest with a result of 80 wings in 9 minutes. Due to having previously competed in a Nathan’s qualifier, the winner was not only prohibited from competing in the January 26 finals, he was excised from the radio station’s website pictures above. The contest rules have the following restrictions for “professional” eaters:
Professional eaters, persons recognized by AICE , the IFOCE or members of any professional eating organization or participants in any professional eating competition are not eligible. The decision of professional eater status will be determined by a WPLR Eat the Meat Official and is final.
If former competitors in a professional eating competition are not eligible, then this restriction could be interpreted as prohibiting all competitors in last year’s “Eat the Meat” contest (who were allowed to compete) as it awarded a prize of $1,000. The original winner (whose name was not given in the email) might have a basis for filing an FCC complaint.
Joe Menchetti won a qualifier for last year’s contest, and was also prohibited from competing in the finals.
The final qualifier will take place on January 24 and requires Connecticut residency to enter.
update I received an email from the original winner of the qualifier, Michael Springer. He competed Nathan’s East Hartford Qualifier and came in fifth with 17.5 HDB and also the Ash Creek Ribs contest where he finished second to last with 1.8 lbs. He informed the radio station of those contests and they said that would not block his participation. After he won the qualifier, the radio station disqualified him for being a “professional” eater despite not having won any prizes in his previous contests.

That is horrible that they would do that. He never won anything, and the station gave him the go ahead. I don’t think he would be able to prove anything though if he decided on filing a law suit.

I think Id rather file a lawsuit for having to compete in wing bowl versus filing one for being kept out af that shenanigan.
It's the Shea's said

a little history…The Shea brothers are the primary ones responsible for eaters not being allowed to compete. Once they feel that a contest may attract the interest of one of thier eaters they will call that venue and threaten suit. Also, this conduct is also reinforced when they prevent others from competing in thier food drinking contests without signing a contract. Its interesting how most Eaters believe that it was WIP who kept Menchetti, Chapman and O’Karma out of Wing Bowl. The fact of the matter is that it was the Shea’s who threatened to pull thier Food Drinking Slaves
Of course you guys (who run this web site) know who wrote this because you can simply connect the IP address with the writer. Personally I could care less about what a couple of Ivy League punks think and I challenge them to say something on this site

We all know who “its the sheas are” and some should give him credit for standing up to bullshit and calling it when he sees it. The smart eaters know that WIP was not responsible for keeping Menchetti O”karma and Chapman out of the wingbowl. What everyone fails to realize is that for two straight years WIP was at the mercy of the shea’s and had to conform to their standards or let them call the shots, or else Sonya would be pulled from the event. The entire concept was based on Wingador going up against Sonya in 2004 and if he lost they would fix it so Wingador would win the following year. They had no intention of letting Ed Jarvis win the first time out either. The Shea’s despised Coondog and Chapman more for their arrogance and nasty emails than being sessionists or refusing to sign contracts . Menchetti’s website certainly didnt score points for him getting into wingbowl. If its a close call you can bet the ranch they will give Wingador the nod over Chestnut in a heartbeat.

I think having access to IP’s and trying to correlate the location with the individual is a slimy decietful way of running a blog site. Everyone has the right to use an anonymous or ficticious name if they chose to do so. Its the only way they can tell you how they really feel without revealing their true identity . There are a great many two faced pricks in competitive eating and dont be surprised if Luther is someone we have met and know very well. He might be one of your top echelon eaters . We must thank god for faroq and romeo who come to the defense of poor innocent females like Sonya and Juliet who always have good things to say about everyone, but get slammed by hateful remarks by these no life lowlifes. And then there is poor Don Moses Lerman who has never uttered a bad word about any competitive eater unless he was the victim of a horrid verbal bashing. Bunch of babies if you ask me

You are full of shit. The Shea’s dont care what Chapman or O”karma have to say unless it hurts thier pockets. Before Chapman or O”karma began posting stuff on Eatfeats they got banned.
