Damon "The Omen" Wells announces that he is leaving Major League Eating. He will become the sixth member of the team attempting the 54 inch pizza at at Big Mama's & Papa's on Sunday. This will probably leave the IFOCE top 50 without any southern Californians whenever it is updated (assuming Ben Monson is removed also.)

Damon loses a qualifier and then quits MLE..Do you think you’ll do any better as an independant?

Another freaking huge loss! If you suck, there’s really no reason to play the game.

You really have to wonder who is trying to make a positive community of competitive eaters no matter whether independent or MLE. It seems that it certainly is not here on eatfeats. Except for Rhonda and Larell Marie, Badlands and a few others from MLE who offer support and information, this place is filled with sarcasm, ill will, sheer hatred, character assassination, libelous comments and a ton of mis-information from same. Instead of fighting over scraps, which is what seems to happen here as in no one is really happy so let’s bash everyone, how about having real conversations, real exchanges of information. Criticism too but let’s be civil. There are many who try and many of those are independents. I need not name them but no wonder people read but do not comment or eventually stop reading. Spoiling the work that goes into this website by these dumb comments does nothing for competitive eating, nothing to increase fans. It just makes competitive eaters seem like bozos.

Any eater to make the final table and the top 20 in this day and age of Major league eaters doesn’t exactly suck. Damon seems like a stand up guy, so why slam him? Who knows why he decided to leave MLE. I did notice he hasn’t competed much in the last year, so it could be personal, health related or maybe just decided to go indy because the lack of MLE events locally to him (on the west coast). OJ, brings up an interesting point with Damon leaving, no Southern CA eaters are in the top 50 now, even though Southern CA has some good eaters. Whatever the reason is, I really hope it isn’t because he lost a qualifier, but based on his reply after Tempe he didn’t sound bitter at all…

Whatever the reason for leaving I wish him luck!

I agree with Petty. If you think Damon “sucks,” then you’ve a piss-poor concept of reality.

Sorry to see you go Damon. If your desire is just to do a couple random local things than believe it or not the MLE is pretty flexible and you don’t really have to abandon the league. But if your goal is to go completely Indy and compete frequently, than that’s a decision you have to make. Either way, I’m sure as you know, it takes dedication and practice to compete and win money in CE, especially in this modern era, talent alone doesn’t get you too far anymore whether you are MLE or Indy. Good luck sir.

MLE is pretty flexible – as long as you’re in the top 20. Some of us not in the top 20 have asked permission to do charity events and been flat out told no.

With those of u outside the top 20 they are probably concerned you’ll lose to some schmo off the street.

With the loss of Damon Wells and its tragic impact on the sport as a whole, i cant imagine what would happen if Seiken announced he was leaving ?

Glad to see Erik the Red giving public advice, he is someone who does not leave ridiculous comments or try to slam someone or just plain get attention like whoever keeps mentioning Seiken at every possible moment.

While some people may have been denied permission, it may not be related to their ranking. The issue of having a qualified EMT, the murky borders between what constitutes challenges and contests and what is charity all play a part. If you have to pay an entry fee and some money goes to “charity” but there are prizes, well it all gets very complicated. Every person whether indy or MLE wants to make money but most do not. Reading somewhere that 7 out of 10 MLE eaters pay to play basically just shows how hard it is to make money. ETR thanks for commenting here.

Anonymous 7:27 the names you mentioned that offer support and information bring nothing to this site but boredom. It is the sarcasm, character assassination and sheer hatred that makes this site popular. Do not forget that
