Guinness: motorcycle backflips – yes, competitive eating – no ?

I would be interested if anyone could explain the logic behind the Guinness Book of World Records not recognizing eating records on the grounds that they are too dangerous, but listing a record for the longest motorcycle backflip (which was broken last night in Las Vegas)

Maybe because motorcycle backflips are so dangerous that only complete psychopaths will try to do it at home. With competitive eating, any kid in a lunchroom can mimic what they see on tv or in the Guiness Book and have an accident as we all know actually happened in Japan. Maybe they don’t want to run that risk?

Touche Tubesock. Guinness also lists records for the longest earhair:

Some kid from Boise is going to try to break that and you know what’s going to happen? He’ll become an outcast in high school, never get a girlfriend, never get laid, be miserable his whole life until he finally breaks the record on his death bed. So then he shaves off the earhair and dies the next day, still miserable and still unlaid. You tell me THAT’S not just as dangerous of an example for America’s youth.

Guiness won’t mess with food records because of to many variables and food records that can’t be varified. Safty issue aside we know what we do can be a danger and some moron will do something really stupid ( look at the kid that tried to jump into a pool from a five story building and missed, ala jackass ). You’ll see the records will become more about mass and volume not just numbers. Maybe when we show solid amounts and not just numbers Guiness might take us seriously

Didn’t they used to have food records in Guinness? For some reason I remember marveling over them as a child and thinking that someday — if there was a chance of me being in that book — it would be in the food section.

Here’s a challenge for you: Go into Burger King (or McDonalds or Wendy’s) and EAT THE MENU. That’s one of everything SINGLE item (excluding extra value meals). That’s a lot of burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries and milkshakes. And don’t forget about the 6, 10, and 20 piece nuggets. Ouch.

Mega munch One of my favorite challenges is to eat the entire dollar menu at wendys. Take a look at my Myspace site for the pictures and the account.

Guinness had 3 or 4 pages of eating records until around 1990 when they were purged on account of being too dangerous. You should probably be able to buy an edition with the eating records at a used book sale for a dollar or less.

This was copied from a 1965 version of Guinness Book of WORLD RECORDS
    Very interesting

Records for eating and drinking by trenchermen do not match those suffering from the rare disease of bulimia (morbid desire to eat) and polydipsia (pathological thirst). Some bulimia patients have to spend 15 hours a day eating, with an extreme consumption of 384 lbs. 2oz. of food in six days by Matthew Daking, aged 12, in 1743 (Known as Mortimers’s case). Some polydipsomaniacs have been said to be unsatisfied by less than 96 pints of liquid a day.
The world’s greatest trencherman is Edward Abraham (“Bozo”) Miller (born 1909) of Oakland, California. He stands 5 feet 7.5 inches tall but weighs from 280-300 lbs., with a 57-inch waist. He has been undefeated in eating contests since 1931.

From a medical point of view, record attempts must be regarded as extremely inadviseable.
