Highest grossing eaters slideshow on CNBC.com
(From Ryan Nerz) The website for “The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch” has a slideshow of the 5 highest grossing eaters in 2007 which it claims are:
1. Takeru Kobayashi – $100,000+ ($5000 according to eatfeats database)
2. Joey “Jaws” Chestnut – $70,000 ($53,000 according to eatfeats database)
3. Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti – $39,500 ($37,500 according to eatfeats database)
4. Tim “Eater X” Janus $18,150 ($16,150 according to eatfeats database)
5. Sonya Thomas $13,600 ($13,600 according to eatfeats database)
The database does not include the “Wedges & Wings” prizes.
Stephanie Florio won $25,000 in a wedding cake eating contest.

I’d like to know what that “$100,000+” really is (or isn’t). I wonder if Joey and Koby’s totals include appearance fees (which the Eat Feats database doesn’t). Actually, does anyone know if these so called “appearance fees” really exist?

Koby charges I believe 10-15 grand to do speaking engadgements. I believe thats where most the money is coming from.

Appearence fees obviously exist. I’ve received them. As recently as THIS month. (Nothing like Kobe, Joey, or the Fridge)
I’d say Philly Guy is a little low in his guestimate on Kobe. W/expenses, I think its more like $25,000.
Mega, don’t get too excited, you still need to pay to get into contests, instead of the other way around.

Appearance fees. Who would get them? How much? I think eatfeats has answered that in combination with the article. (CNBC $)-(eatfeats $)=(appearance fee). That would be my guess.
Example #1: Joey Chestnut: $70,000-$53,000=$17,000.
This may be close to reality. Again this is my guess and I think it sounds reasonable.

Before too long, I would expect Crazy Legs to be very much in that market, commanding a few thou in appearance fees. After all, eating is only part of the game, and Legs has pieces of the total package.
In the not-too-distant future, he may well write a book that outsells the other two pulp (semi-)fictions out there. I’ve yet to buy either of those, but I’d snatch up a book that Crazy Legs writes in a heart beat, simply because I like his style, his positive outlook on life, and the respect he conveys for his fellow man.
He’s also got a great mother and a wonderful sense of humor!
