Juliet Lee article in gazette.net

Gazette.net has an article about Juliet Lee in which Ryan Nerz appears to have forgotten about Carlene LeFevre:

She’s one of two women who have really made a mark on the sport, Nerz said.

Sonya ‘‘The Black Widow” Thomas, of Alexandria, Va., started on the competitive eaters circuit in 2003. She also eats one meal per day.

‘‘There’s good reasons why women might feel a little squeamish about doing such a graphic looking sport,” Nerz said. ‘‘It’s interesting that the two women who have broken in are tiny, dainty, very feminine women.”

Juliet says her performance was hurt by a root canal on July 2.

Carlene even now would still easily be a top 20 eater! That’s what you get after the federation uses you for all it can. Nothing NO RESPECT!! They push you to the side an before long your forgotten like you never were there to begin with. This is a perfect example of that! This MLE thing is about money nothing else. Heinz offered how much last year 200,000 and this year only 20,000 of at least that amount if not more was given to the eaters. “I’m talking Greed!! How you gonna deal with the n@$$@# that I feed??” (Ice Cube) Nuff said…..

I’m sure his oversight was not on purpose. There’s so much information out there I’m surprised those guys can remember half of what they do.

He was probably thinking more in terms of current eaters. Understandable. Although if anyone should know the history of the sport it’s Ryan. He wrote a book on it (including a chapter about Carlene and Rich, if I remember correctly).

Toro – The Sheas aren’t stupid. They’re running a business. They obviously don’t have to funnel much of their sponsorship money down to the competitors. I’d guess that most people who read this site would eat without any prize money at all. After all, Nathan’s is the undisputed top event in CE and still would claim that title even if they hadn’t paid one penny to the eaters this year.

I know this Ryan kid pretty well 🙂 and I would imagine that it strikes him as amusing that readers would assume that HE had said Juliet was one of 2 women who had made an impact on the sport, as opposed to a relatively competitive-eating-ignorant reporter having surmised that there were only 2 female eaters. It is, however, possible that he said there were 2 female eaters competing TODAY, and the writer extrapolated. Regardless, both Roscoe and Ryan love the ladies both in and outside of competitive eating, and that definitely includes Carlene…

Thanks everyone for pointing out that discrepancy. I don’t think Ryan meant to omit Carlene from the females who have made an impact on the sport; it was probably just an oversight. El Toro is 100% correct that Carlene would still be well up into the top 20 if she were still competing. She hasn’t lost anything and would have improved her numbers just like everyone else has if she were still competing. She has shown in short demos that she still has what it takes and can continue to eat with the best.
