Kobayashi diagnosed with temporomandibular joint disorder
In his most recent blog entry, Kobayashi reports that he is suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder (which is translated from Japanese as gnathal arthropathy), making opening his mouth difficult (automatically translated):
As for the gnathal arthropathy for the food fighter, if you refer to the baseball, kind of those where the pitcher breaks down the elbow.
Speaking honestly, the finishing the fact that it makes cure almost is desperate circumstance to the conference July 4th.
Say, not to be story of the conference of Nathan’s, the serious problem which relates to also future activity.
It is the fatal wound.
In order to cure, repose and long-term remedy are necessary.
update France24 has a translation of Kobayashi’s blog entry

Joey sets a new worlds record. Then word comes Koby may not compete because he is still mourning his mother who passed away months ago. Then word comes Koby will show and compete July 4. Now word comes Koby has a tooth ache. If I was not cynical I would see this as a storyline being laid in case Koby loses. This way Koby can lose to Joey while saving face in his mind.
I think Koby is trying to set up smoke screens in hopes Joey lets his gaurd down. Koby is running scared and these stories with so many excuses being made just in case Koby loses is proff that Kiby takes Joey very seriously and is running scared this time.
This time Joey is in the drivers seat with the new record and Koby is the contender.
If Joey wins I would like to see Koby shake Joey’s hand and say this time he got beat by a better man.

After defeating Joey time and time again in Brats, Krystals twice and twice at Nathans Koby has already proven hes by far the better eater no matter what happens on July 4. Even if Koby loses to Joey he will still have beaten Joey five of six times. Theres tons of pressure on Joey to see if he can ever get the job done. Koby has gottent the job done each and every time.

I hope Joey eats with his back to the camera after eleven minutes because it might not be pretty.

Are you kidding? Temporomandibular joint disorder? Could this be CE’s first ever real eating related injury? Is he suggesting that he WON’T be at Coney or is he saying he’ll be there but he’ll be eating through the pain? Can I possibly ask more questions?

Whoa. That’s terrible. I’m also having trouble divining what he’s saying from the translated text. I think we need some translating help from Crazy Legs Mom.

For me, the question is not whether Joey will beat Koby… but will Koby be beaten by anyone else? Lest we forget that Pat Bertoletti ate 46 HDB in his qualifier. That’s only 7 1/2 HDBs from Koby’s personal best, and 2 more than one of his Coney Island wins (in 2003).
Koby could still pull it out, but there are two competitors literally biting at his heels.
Go Pat!

One’s health and longevity is more important than any job, vocation, hobby, or other endeavor. I think Koby has earned the benefit of the doubt here.
The man already said he will be here and that should be respected. But whether he is able to make it or not, that does not take anything away from anyone.. If it does, then we have a lot of insecure eaters who need to move on.
I think any other world eater would do well to try to emulate the class act that is Kobayashi. Whenever he does leave the competitive eating scene no one will fully fill the void he leaves behind. He remains and always will remain the greatest competitive eater to ever live.

I had TMJ when I was in the Navy. I didn’t realize till it was too late that when ever I was on my motorcycle I was clenching my teeth, and add in the sudden habit of grinding them in my sleep I really screwed up my jaw, and it still cracks sometimes, which is painful. I remember it was like the day after going to the gym for the first time in a month, not being able to move. You can slowly open your mouth fully, but then it takes as much time to close it again. If Koby is this bad, I don’t see him competing. He would have to give up training in order to recover, and it will take months before he is normal, let alone able to train. It is possible that training at that point will only cause more damage. I don’t know what types of surgery are available, since the Navy only offers asprin and an ice pack.

Don’t Fall for it guys Koby is at home right now training like a mad man. He will be bigger and stronger than he has ever been. He’s hoping you take the bait and don’t train, but don’t fall for it.
