Kobayashi fails to break Sonya Thomas’ fruitcake record

The New York Daily News has a report on Kobayashi’s attempt to break Sonya Thomas’ IFOCE fruitcake record at Gabriella’s Restaurant. Kobayashi fell 6 ounces short of the mark set by the “Black Widow” in a 2003 contest (and Badlands Booker’s amount in that competition as well). Kobayashi said the density of the fruitcake, which he had never eaten before, made it difficult to consume quickly.

MSNBC has a picture. Cookie Jarvis also attended the event.

NBC San Diego has video from the event. 14 pounds of fruitcake were on hand.

update NBCNewYork has two videos. Cookie Jarvis and Badlands Booker ate alongside Kobayashi at the end of his attempt to get him past the threshold. Kobayashi did not resort to dunking the fruitcake even when the record appeared in doubt.

Sonya Thomas has a comment about Kobayshi’s record attempt on her news page.

Update #2 Kobayashi’s attempt was mentioned on ESPN Sportscenter. Here is a clip (20 seconds .9 MB)

NY1 News also has a video clip

Koby is wondeful, BUT it was wonderful to see one of Sony’s records remain intact

Where was the commissioner?. It seems as though they are grooming Jarvis for the position

I’m still a bit confused on how competitive eater can help fight world hunger. Isn’t giving all the food to one person a little bit counterproductive?

I could just picture Ed Jarvis talking to Don Lerman or some of his other pals on the phone a few days before the event saying this is going to be big big media coverage and the restaurant will be packed with fans and news reporters from all over the world. It hardly lived up to it’s hype. Glad that Kobe did not break the record or we would be dealing with another black widow temper tantrum. Website message would read “sonyatheblackwidow.com coming soon”

And not on that list, but a worthy eater, is the world famous Hangman. How he got over looked in the new ratings just baffles me but I am sure he’ll land in the top 15 once he takes down the next Broadway at the Beach..

Good to see the Hungman has returned. He has been missed. Without him, we’d forget about the Hangman.

I hate fruitcake….I admit I would not eat it in a train, on a plane, in the dark, or in a park. I do not like it with some spam, I do not like it Anonymous you am

This is an outrage. Not even a mention of Ed Jarvis appearing or competing in the fruitcake event on IFOCE.com. Now i see why other old school eaters did not bother showing up.

Why does the IFOCE still insist (in their news story) that Sonya set the Fruitcake record in 2001, when it was Dec 30, 2003? They have the right information on the Records page. And they apparently don’t bother correcting the news media, whose stories all maintain that the record was established in 2001. Sonya probably never even knew the IFOCE existed in 2001.

Don’t worry anonymous, I’m sure the people who watched the ESPN segment or the video couldn’t miss him.
