This is great because it means that independents are coming on strong. With Kobayashi in the independent world, eaters have a great addition to their numbers.

Is it on ESPN? Or is it only a event for Canada residents to watch? If so I am sure Pete will do his country proud. Go Pete! What is the prize purse? In Euros?

I hope Koby’s having fun. He sure is paying a heck of a price for freedom.

He goes from being the most recognized competitive eater in the world at the most recognized/prestigious competitive eating event world-wide to being top draw at the local Gringo Bandito Hot Sauce, which I’ve neither ever used, nor heard of.

I could very much understand Koby’s retirement from competitive eating, with appearances to do exhibitions and such, but he’s still competing for money (LITTLE MONEY!), and against people he knows he can clobber! Maybe that’s the whole idea … I don’t know.

For me this is self-imposed (manager-imposed) self-degradation. The logic is just plain stupid! I don’t know another word for it.

But then again, how do you place a price on principle, if you can even call it that? As for me, its price tag is hyperinflated!

Some others: Rich LeFevre, Randy Santel, Joel Podelsky, Will Millender, Chris Abatsas, Floria Lee, Chiun Peng (apparently allowed to switch-hit between IFOCE & independent), Tomas Cortina, Colin Gardner (Battle of the Bone winner), Eric Dahl

I would consider Brad Sciullo and Ian Hickman as on hiatus since they haven’t competed recently and did not show at contests where it was announced they would attend.

good point OJ… I guess i didn’t really consider Rich an indy now and Peng for some reason is just one of those guys you forgets there (which maybe the case for him being abole to do both indy and IFOCE events…

if that’s the case I guess you can put Rich and Peng in Brad and Ian’s spots…

as for Randy Santel, isn’t he more of a food challenge guy and not an actual speed eating competitor… (Despite him just doing Sushi?)

Good list JMO! I pretty much agree, except I’d reverse Pete and Squibb, I’d put Boone and Menchetti in the middle of the top 10, and I’d take Hickman and Scuillo out due to inactivity. As such, I’d move Longo and Excel into the top 10.
