Nathan’s contest to start at noon, to be tape delayed on ESPN

The Olympics will apparently not be the only tape-delayed sporting event this summer. The Nathan’s Famous facebook page announces that the Nathan’s finals will begin at the tradition starting time of noon eastern and a recording of the event will be televised on ESPN at 3pm. A comment says that the contest will be televised live on another ESPN network. (via Larell Marie email) update The schedule listing on ESPN.go.com does not currently show a hot dog contest at noon July 4 on any ESPN network.

update The Brooklyn Paper gives a conflict with a Brooklyn Cyclones game as the reason for the time shift. The game will start at 6 pm, two hours after original end of the contest. Presumably, the Cyclones schedule has been set since the start of the baseball season in April so it is surprising that no conflict would be announced until 9 days before July 4. The maximum attendance at the Cyclones ballpark is 10,000, a fifth of the estimated attendance at the Nathan’s finals.

update June 26 IFOCE.com announces the contest will not be televised live on any ESPN cable channel; it will be streamed on ESPN3.com

I’m really surprised with the clout and negotiation powers of the ifoce that ESPN dares shows second rate programming like some tennis match in England (not even American like our great American gluttony championship)

Ha finally Good for their asses. I am hoping after the 4 yr contract runs out that CNBC will show will televise it in less than viewable quality like 2003. Is the woman contest on internet tape delay? LOL

Its all a bit confusing? Better we concentrate on the new statndard in July 4th hot dog contest the Crif Dog Classic. Nathans definately losing respect left and right pretty soon it will only be reported on by the last person who give a shit… BB.com.

Roberta’s should sign the contract with ESPN to televise the Criif dog classic with Kobayashi. Unlike Coney Island and Nathans they make a stern effort to keep the undesirable dirtbags away from the restaurant that might pose dangerous threats to others

So the mens contest will be shown on the regular ESPN channel but on tape delay at 3pm ? It would not surprise me if the contest will be shown next year on ESPN 3 which is internet Cannot get any lower than that. Finally man and women will be on even terms.

How is Crif Dog Classic the new standard? You need to be picked by Kobayashi to lose against him. No qualifying, just picked. He may as well have picked 8 people out of the crowd at the restaurant.

Sheas blew it by arresting kobayashi ESPN realizes Chestnut alone is not going to carry the ratings. No fun watching him blow away the second place eater by 20 or more. The contest from now on will be on tape delay or internet Nothing to do with conflict of events. Greed is a bitch

Nathan’s ain’t no bargain. You have to spend all kinds of sick money to travel and qualify to lose against Joey Chestnut. All for a cheap trophy and no hotdogs like they use to give in the old days.

I certainly have no problem with the tape delay. I fall asleep just as quickly watching a recording of a taped event as I do one from a live broadcast.

I think this might now be as bad as people are making it out to be. So many people are glued to there smartphones all day and who might not be around a tv at the time can watch in. Also i think people with Xbox accounts can stream the even from espn3 live right to there tv. Its untraditional and for those die-hard to the tv it ruins it, but for the greater population it might turn out to be a success. Well just have to see.

If you read all of the article with the details I agree with Stonie, think it isn’t bad at all. It also shows how much goes into MLE planning and selling themselves and their product to other people’s products. What they do might seem easy but it is very complicated. As Stonie said, we will just have to wait and see.

Am I misunderstanding that in order to watch on ESPN3 u have to be a paid ESPN subscriber with an account?? Am very confused at this point as to what / where /when to tell family Lol….it doesn’t take much 🙂

I would suggest to solve that problem tell the entire family to come out to Coney

The men and women are screwed . Kobayashi must be laughing his ass off realizing that without him vs Joey the contest is a sham. ESPN also realized that Joey blowing out the same competition wont do much for ratings so tennis match from England should take first priority

Inclusion of ESPN3.com varies with internet providers. You could try viewing a current program on ESPN3.com. If it works, the Nathan’s finals will probably be available, if not you are out of luck.

The main interest for me would be to see if each eater in both events can achieve personal bests. There, that’s both politically correct and very positive.

If every event was live streamed the MLE audience would exponentially grow by the masses. Everyone involved would make much more money. A tiny fraction of 1% of the population is aware of other competitive eating events. Once we can share the live events in our social communities we may have a chance at large audience live broadcasts, until then why would the sport become more entertaining. Cost = Internet connection and a $200 HD video camera.

I hear that MLE is inviting select eaters to compete in some event similar to CE biggest eater. Same favortism shit. Of course you know that CLC was the first to get an email

I am still confused though OJ does comment on the 27th to check ESPN3. So it will not be live but time delayed? (there is a difference between live and live-streamed?) but guess that you have cable and you have ESPN on that cable, you also get ESPN3 based upon the below link.

look if its not on the tube its not going to get the exposure it should be getting. Most folks go to the movie theatre to watch a movie and not on the computer screen
