Pat (from Moonachie) I don’t blame you or ANY other eater for entering nonIFOCE-sponsored events. People signed up to eat–not watch the lunch parade go by. If most eaters waited on the IFOCE to invite them, or waited to secure a spot at a Fed-sponsored CE table, they would only be able to eat about once a quarter.

I can easily envision the IFOCE being trimmed down to a handful of members by the end of 2008 or early 2009: Joey, Pat, Tim, Crazy Legs, and perhaps one or two others. With Koby, Sonya, and a few other disgruntled top IFOCE eaters abandoning their ranks, I see the possibility for substantial growth in not only the number of independent eaters, but also a marked increase in revenue and income for these people–whether they affiliate themselves with the AICE or not.

After all, in most cases, the IFOCE needs these eaters more than the eaters need it. That’s a fact of life and something to chew on.

I’m not so sure, Rhonda. For top ranked eaters (the top 15 or so), the financial rewards and promotional capabilities of the Shea’s can’t be matched by any other organization (which is why Sonya and Koby aren’t going anywhere). For lower ranked eaters, the IFOCE does a good job of selling a sense of being a part of some larger than any indivual eater. Eaters feel like they’re part of a fraternity or even part of a legitimate sports league. You can’t find that anywhere else.

Pat why do you want to risk you health for this? Aren’t you alergic to Egg Nog? I mean it sucks that you have gotten the short end of the stick lately with the IFOCE, but after last years events is it really worth it?

Who else is going to promote a sonya thoma besides the ifoce? What are her great skills besides eating? Very true what mega said. Eaters feel like they actually have someting to live for. . I think the sheas like the idea of making people feel like they are important when in reality they are not really important .

I hear you Dave, but that is bound to get old fast when there are far fewer frat meetings (eating events), coupled with feast or famine-type compensation for the select few participants.

I wouldn’t want to belng to a fraternity like that — to hell with affiliation!

Pat’s loyalty to O&A stretches far beyond his loyalty to the ifoce. He was with O&A before he got involved in competitiive eating. Regardless of how much money Pat has pulled in with radio which is peanuts or regardless of how much O&A poke fun at him, he appears on the show quite often and they plug him whenever they can. That is true loyalty. Look at Pat’s myspace which tells it all. He has thousands of friends. Loads of hot looking women and his publicity with O&A outweighs whatever the ifoce has ever given to him which is next to nothing. With that said Mr Philbin is making a wise choice .

What are her great skills besides eating? Is it not competitive eating? That’s a stupid, stupid statement. I would continue to post anonymously.

Then what are her great skills besides eating promotion wise Rhonda ? Hmm?. I thought you promised just the other day that you would stop sticking your two cents into every single comment that is posted on this site.

Rhonda, you may be right. IFOCE/MLE, and AICE, could easily be wiped out by someone who offers consistent contests, travel money, and more opportunites for ALL the eaters. Like I’ve said before, whoever gets the right marketing and sales force, and goes for it, will win.

Contests should be coming monthly, and in several states, rather than once-in-a-blue-moon, with heavy travel required with no compensation.

Eater loyalty is there to both leagues only because the right mix of money, fun, and respect hasn’t come along. IFOCE/MLE needs to act more like a major league rather than a fraternity – because major league business is being lost, and the keg parties are too infrequent, and the tap spits foam way too much.

Well said Marketing 101. Look, I don’t blame the Sheas for trying to make some money. They’re the risk-takers and deserve ample compensation. (I’ve said this at least four times on this site.)

I just think it’s a bit much to demand eater loyalty from all eaters when all but a select few really benefit by being in demand to participate and others are virtually shunned. Loyalty needs to be reciprocated.

And sure, the best deserve to be rewarded the most — no doubt. When CE gains, everyone eater gains to some extent, but two things need to happen first:

    1. The purse structure needs to be altered to pay at least 7 out of every 10 eaters.
    2. Don’t keep table-enders or near table-enders from participating in extra-IFOCE events, when those events represent some of the few times they can earn a little spending money and have a little bit of fun doing it.

That’s not too much to ask … is it?

Ask for less. That was too much.

Thanks M 101. Well, I am just stating logical, very possible consequences. With fewer and fewer events open to less or only the more proven eaters, the giddiness of being affilliated with the same organization as Kobayashi and the more popular eaters will rapidly wane. Eaters want to eat and have fun doing it. Once it becomes a drag, many eaters will drag themselves elsewhere.

Pat is a nice guy and pretty good eater, at least with hotdogs. Doing the eggnog contest may not be the problem. It’s what he did after which didn’t sit well with the IFOCE. I’m sure he did that outrageous act because he thinks Opie and Anthony will make him a part of the show. I doubt that will ever happen, not that Pat won’t be a great addition to the show but O&A probably could care less about him and use his willingness to “perform” for their own ratings.

FYI, i’m not allergic to egg nog, as a matter of fact, this will be my 4th year in the contest. When I go on O&A, I appreciate them having me on and I don’t “expect” anything from them.

    Pat,

I emailed who your supposed to email. I haven’t heard anything back.

If you want some competition, let them know i’m interested.

You will likely be suspended or expelled again just for doing the contest, so you may as well put the icing on the cake by going against me.

    Joe,

The contest is two weeks out and “pre-planning” isn’t exactly the O&A staff’s strong suit, i’m sure they got your e-mail and you’ll probably get a response closer to the contest.

I’m not looking to stir the pot, I just see it as I was ‘Grandfathered” into that contest and it would be pretty hypocritical for me to get banned after them being well aware that i’ve done it 3 years in a row …I guess we’ll see!

    Pat,

They used to grandfather events. I’m pretty sure that went out the window when they don’t even allow challenges.

Poor Subich couldn’t even feel comfortable eating a good sized meal with some fellow competitors, for fun last week. The Shea’s like him, you know you aren’t at the top of their xmas card list.

    Simple. Call & ask!

I think its great when another sponsor other than the ifoce no matter who it may be considers you the kobe of their arena even for just one day . That just eats them up(shea’s) alive. That same jealousy that other eaters feel when they are left out of shows like spike , is exhibited the same way by the ifoce when they ban or suspend someone for participating in a non sanctioned event. Pat deserves to be in the spotlight and have his day.

O&A and CE serve two different purposes for someone like Pat Philbin. With O&A his lovely face can only be heard on radio and seen on the internet . That doesnt make much sense what i just wrote now does it? As popular as O&A has become, would anyone recognize either of them if they walked down the street? Howard Stern yes but not O&A . I think people would recognize Pat before O&A Jim Norton or anyone else on that show. With CE he gets facial exposure on tv. Pat from Moonachie enjoys eating more than drinking so it would be a travesty if they suspended or banned him again

I don’t need to have “my day”, I had just as much fun when Badlands beat me, I do it because I have fun participating in O&A events, their fans are the best! (and worst! 😉 )
