Philly.com on El Wingador vs. Canseco press conference
Philly.com has an article about yesterday’s press conference to promote tonight’s match between Jose Canseco and Bill “El Wingador” Simmons, who expressed dissatisfaction with his remuneration:
Only Canseco – because he’s the “name” – is paid a “celebrity appearance fee” upfront. That ticked off Simmons.
“[Feldman] is giving Canseco $10,000,” Simmons told me. “I’m only getting $2,000. That’s disrespectful.”
Simmons said he wanted $5,000 for tonight’s fight and threatened to withhold the $4,400 he claimed he raised from selling tickets.

I was seriously thinking of attending this event regardless of the out of the way location but after hearing that Wingador is only getting 2grand for his appearance i think i will pass on it. What a show of disrespect to a great champ

Does “el wingydore” really think that he is anywhere nere the celebrity status of Jose Canseco? Really?
Jose Canseco is a steroid popping, homerun ball off of the top of his head hero.
I’ve never seen anyone with a Simmons rookie card, or a signed chicken wing.
Simmons should be MORE THAN GREATFUL to even be seen in public with Canseco. Let alone get paid $2000.00 to get his ass whooped by him.
And as far as the $4400.00 he collected for ticket sales, that goes to show you how many of Billys “friends” want to see him get his ass whooped, especially by Jose Canseco.

I’m actually shocked when I see Wingador’s name mentioned in the same sentence as Jose Conseco. I actually took it as a joke when I read about the boxing match between the two. I still can hardly believe it.
When Conseco was in his prime it was as if his body was chiseled out of a rock, this apart from his baseball talent. El Wingador wasn’t 1/10 as good in CE as Conseco was in baseball.

Yeah, I’m not sure El Wingador has much room to complain here. Canseco gets $10,000, Wingador gets $2,000. He’s getting paid a one-fifth of what Canseco is making but he’s probably a one-tenth of the celebrity Canseco is.

say say say what you want about Jose. Steroids or not , he hit close to 500 homeruns in his 16yr career. I would prefer to see Ed Jarvis hit Canseco with one of his famous Ralph Kramden one punch knockouts a la my friend Harvey in the poolroom episode of the Honeymooners.

You people have to remember, this fight was scheduled to be in Aston, PA, which is only 15 minutes outside of Philadelphia, El Wingador’s Home Town. Bill Simmons is a HUGE celebrity here in Philly and people were buying tickets to that event to see him, not Jose Canseco. If this match was to take place anywhere except Simmons’ back yard, I would agree with all of what you people are saying, but, being here, Bill Simmons has more drawing power than Jose and needs to be paid accordingly.
