Why does every competitive eating article written by a serious journalist always focus on Kobayashi? It’s like writing about rock music and saying “this guy Elvis is really making waves!” He hasn’t done anything noteworthy in years!

Kobayashi doesn’t have to do anything more. He is by far the most talented competitive eater of all time. Joey, in terms of recognition, cannot hold a candle to Kobayashi. He will always be the person who doubled the hotdog record on his first appearance, and his resume is far longer than Joey’s. He is the most well known competitive eater ever.

If they ever build a comp eating hall of fame a stoned carved image of Kobe should grace the front entrance

i think George Shea realizes that kobe was the greatest and lately i hear he mentions his name prior to contests. On the flip side Kobe has nothing but disdain bitterness and anger towards the Shea brothers and for good reason. I honestly think that if they ran into each other on the street George would offer his hand while Kobe would look at it give him a dirty look and walk away

He had the man ARRESTED. Besides the trauma of that, while barely speaking the language, It could have also jeopardized his US status.

11:37, you are right about most, but I think the Sheas had good reason to not let him compete if he was going to do his own thing any other time. He refused to sign a contract, that is the way it is. Joey carried Nathans for many years. I think the Sheas had nothing to do with Kobayashi getting a special visa and that they were surprised when he moved to New York and had Maggie James speaking for him. From Koby’s point of vue, he just couldn’t understand the contract. That is his fault, and his loss. It is also MLE’s loss, but they had no choice.
