The Washington Post profiles Juliet Lee
The Washington Post has an long article and gallery about Juliet Lee and her family which mentions her next competition:
Right now she is getting ready for her next major event, a meatball-eating contest in Vegas on Nov. 8. Only Lee pointedly says she is not getting ready. She doesn’t do test runs or drink stomach-stretching amounts of water or train in any way for an eating outing. “If I ever start training, they going to be really scared of me,” she says.
To which her competitors respond: “She’s lying. Everybody who’s semi-decent in this sport trains in some way,” says Tim “Gravy” Brown, a 205-pound Chicago eater ranked ninth in the world. “You can’t just show up and eat 60 hotdogs.”
The Washington Post’s 2005 article about Sonya Thomas is also available.
update Oct 13 A transcript of a Washington Post chat session with JulietLee is available.

How freakin’ awesome is Tim for actually calling a spade a spade. Or calling a Juliet a Juliet or whatever. Very refreshing for a top guy to actually say something and be honest.

Gee, who knows – I guess nearly a million daily readers in the nation’s capitol may care? Otherwise I guess it’s a complete waste of time for the 40 commenters here 🙂

Good article on Juliet, but it forgets to say that half her food is usually on the floor or under the table. She knows it and practices it constally.

Great article, Juliet! A friend from Washington D.C. called to tell me it was on the front page – a first for competitive eating, I think. It’s extremely positive to have words like “normal” associated with competitive eating. You are a great public face for the sport – keep up the good work.

Stevie if you mean the article about her being on the front page of a newspaper was a 1st for competitive eating, then no: my article was on the front page of the Sunday Denver Post a few years ago. Above the fold.

Actually, there have been a ton of competitive eating articles on front pages – my favorite? When my daughter was on the front page of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution June 24, 2007 proudly showing off her “zoo-themed” face paint as she competed in the neat-eating contest!
The same day – myself, Bubba, and some overall-wearing loud-mouth were on the front page of the Metro section – the only downer…Bubba and I were not the winner, it was the other guy in the picture.

How do chat sessions work? Juliet Lee does not speak or write English the way her answers are presented.

She may well not train. The 1 meal habit, and the fact he says he use to eat fish, veggies and fruits (low calorie foods) may well have conditioned her natural capacity. Just as an example when i was overweight i could pack 2+ gallons without any training; now that i eat less i can hardly pack 1 gallon. And by the way, while not training with the actual food she tries to find techniques that would go fine with the food she will consume in the next competition. BTW Koby must have done that with krystals too, so she won’t be the first one doing that and actually winning a competition…
