2011 Dallas Wingstop wings results

update Apr 20 WingstopOfficial produced a video about the contest.

update Apr 18 #2 Brad Holt has uploaded a video in which Pat Bertoletti estimates his
total at 180 wings.

update Apr 18 Philly.com has an article about Bob Shoudt who thinks the Wingstop contest judging was superior to Wing Bowl judging.

update Apr 15 Pepper Hastings attended the contest and posted a comment to the MLE facebook about what he observed after the competition.

update Apr 14 The Chitown Hustler has a short video with the following amounts in the caption:
1) Pat Bertoletti 171 oz
2) Bob Shoudt 164 oz
3) Joey Chestnut 127 oz
4) Sonya Thomas 126 oz.

(Were 5th ($750) and 6th ($250) places ever announced? Both places awarded prizes.)

Patrick Michels has a Dallas Observer gallery. The date on the novelty check was not changed from February 1 and the check makes it appear that the entire $10,000 purse goes to the winner. update A contest report has been added containing an interview with Pat Bertoletti, who thinks the totals might be exaggerated.

Here is Pat Bertoletti’s wing eating contest resume according to the eatfeats database. He more than tripled his amount from his previous 12 minute wing contest at the 2009 Buffalo Wing Festival.

8:55 Bryan Beard reported that Pat’s total was originally announced as 176 ounces or 11 pounds. This is not only more than the official IFOCE 12 minute wing eating contest record of 7.50 pounds (actual amount appears to be 7.05 pounds) that Joey Chestnut set at the 2007 Trip Rewards contest, but more than the boneless wing record of 7.72 pounds in 12 minutes set last year by Tim Janus.

8:21 Bertoletti is credited with 288 wings in 12 minutes which is a pace of two wings every five seconds

8:00 George Shea confirms the top 4.

7:58 Erik Denmark reports that the amounts are being re-weighed.

7:49 Bryan Beard has the top 4: “4th sonya 125oz 3rd joey 128 2nd bob 1st pat 176 oz”

7:36 the contest is over and amounts are being weighed according to BizCom.

Wing-eating contest frenzy outside WFAA studios

The Wingstop World Wing-Eating Championship was taking place right outside our Victory Park studio during the six o’clock news on Wednesday, so Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus offered play-by-play commentary.

There is no way in hell Bertoletti could eat 11 pounds of wing meat off the bone. He couldn’t o even done that eating a de-boned chicken! I bet Sonya and Joeys totals are legit. Bertletti is a damn cheater and the ifoce is a freaking joke and both deserve each other.

How do u call someone a cheater right out of the box?!

Isn’t the more likely scenario a mistake in judging?? It certainly wouldn’t be the 1st time, nor the last.

Pat’s also a hell of an eater, while the spread seems excessive, it is possible.

Particularly if all his wings were hot & other competitors wings were cold.

The only thing this proves how amusing these results are. So given their track record in wings, Pat and Bob are going to dominate Joey in wings, beating his total by 3 pounds, which is in itself, more than several good eaters can even eat? I think not. It only workd that way in fiction novels.

This contest finally brings to light how great Pat and Bob are. There is no reason why they should not be 1-2 in the world.

  18. Rhonda Evans said

Congratulations to the top four. Pats total is unbelievable … beyond imagination.

I feel sorry for Joey and Sonya, who apparently ate 8 pounds and 7 pounds, 13 ounces and finished 3rd and 4th, respectively?

I cannot help but think something is rotten in Denmark (no pun intended, Erik), regarding the weighing.

It is very possible that Pat really won the contest, but there is no way he topped Joey and Sonya by 3+ pounds. He’s good, but if he were that good he would clearly be # 1 in the world.

This sounds funny, but I mean it sincerely. It would behoove the IFOCE to enlist local interested, intelligent middle and high school kids to tackle their weighing/counting problem. They’d likely do it for free too!

Weighing/counting continues to be a joke in the IFOCE; performing those actions correctly continues to be the exception; erring is the norm.

Also, even with the large $10,000 purse, given the prize structure and the cost of air fare, the way things worked out, people finishing below third likely lost money traveling to the contest. That’s a shame.

At least the IFOCE made money, however, and that’s really what counts. Everything else is secondary. The joke’s on the eaters.

can you say WWF…….Don’t ya get it yet??? The mle is a circus side show with the eaters as the freaks. Few people appreciate what competitive eating really is. mle doesn’t do anything to contradict that either, just as their on stage banter is that of a circus ring master. The sad thing is many of the eaters believe what mle claims and that CE is the path to fortune and fame. If they get lucky mle might just get bigger than the national spelling bee but that’s about it.

The totals are amazing I agree. They got weighed the way they should have… the only way a wing contest should go down. Did people not see the video of Pat the other day eating wings on the local TV show? I don’t doubt that total at all, he’s a monster when it comes to eating chicken / turkey off the bone. Simply awesome… I bet he was just in the zone.

The pace of 1 wing every 2.5 seconds is definitely a little outrageous though, with the way he chipmunks, it seems like that pace would have to slow down after a while unless he was just swallowing everything whole.

1 wing every 2.5 secs is not unheard of, but let’s be real-
11lbs in 12 mins. Judges in Tx obv smoke crack!
That was no WB- it was 10 g’s to fly out there 2x compete 1x & get robbed by crazy judges.
Yeah I wouldn’t even count this toward rankings.

I doubt that this is “the year” or he would’ve put that number up a LOOONG time ago. He’s a good eater, but NO WAY he’s droppin numbers over Bob, Sonya, & Joey. No way. @Doc what’s Squibb got to do w/this? He isn’t MLE or IFOCE. If you knew anything you’d know MLE/IFOCE dont do WB. Get a clue dude… Get a clue.

Now that the IFOCE is going to spot Pat Bertoletti three pounds over Joey at eating contests, I can’t wait to see him eat 78 hotdogs at Nathan’s this year. But due to yesterday’s results, I heard that ESPN has decided to forgo Coney Island and just focus it on Pat and Bob demonstrating how many pigs can fly out of their butts. Yesterday, marks the day that competitive eating and the MLE went from mildly interesting to the general public to utterly ridiculous. All MLE records and eating accomplishments are now subject to question. If Bob, Pat or the MLE want to demonstrate true character and try to regain a little credibility, they should publicly dismiss these results as wrong on their websites. If they don’t, that means they accept the results and competitive eating as a sham. I wouldn’t blame Joey and Sonya if they started to separate themselves from these jokers. Unfortunately for them, as Kobi is painfully pointing out, it’s hard for those with true character and talent to make it as independent.

The reason people might appear to be freaking out (WTH) is because of the money at stake. Fair is fair at any level, but gravity is added with extra purse money, especially when the difference between first and third is $4,000.

I doubt Joey would have shown up if he did not feel he had a legitimate shot to win the $5,000 first prize. When totals (as a result of faulty/haphazard/inconsistent weighing/counting practices) appear to be suspect, as in this contest, real results are not translated into proper placings, which drive winnings. This makes eaters feel cheated, whether intended or not; perceptions become reality.

When that happens on several occasions it’s easy (for me, at least) to understand how excellent eaters begin to develop a feeling of learned helplessness, so to speak, in that they begin to feel that performance is not correlated with placings, so why try your best if it’s all a crap shoot—-when, in essence, how well you perform doesn’t matter.

    That why eaters freak out.

Wings is a technique food, as Pat mentioned before in his interview, they don’t fill him up like other foods. You can’t compare a technique food weight consumption with something like hotdogs / hamburgers where stomach capacity becomes more approached.

I think screw ups do happen a lot, and that ALL eaters have been adversely affected at one time or another.

I also think that some eaters like it when it happens, because it becomes a very convenient excuse with which to divert attention (away from their performances) to rationalize why their results weren’t better.

Hence, the best eaters routinely take responsibility for their results; the ones who feel sorry for themselves—-those who like to play the martyr role—- don’t.

Those who vehemently disagree with this are probably the latter.

Big Sexy, close to 4 pounds is pretty darn good, regardless of the “winning”/in-the-money totals. I remember back when Oleg won the first Buffalo Wingfest (2002, I think), his total was less than 3 pounds.

Pat is arguably the best of the rest, without Koby competing. Joey is in a class by himself. Topping Joey once or twice a year doesn’t make Pat Numero Uno. Wingstop was not one of those times. Pat owes Joey $3,000.

    I totally fucking agree!:

(by) Pepper Hastings: (Above is 4 year old record. OK, so TWO guys on the same night beat the world record by more than 2.5 pounds each (at 10 lbs), yet top wing eaters Sonya and Joey finish at just near 8 lbs? Guys, somebody made some mistakes at a weighing tabl…e. Nearly 20 minutes after the event, the officials from Wing Stop were still looking at and murmuring to each other about their scoring sheet, which was nothing more than a handwritten pad with names and numbers. One of the guys thought about throwing it in the trash but saw us looking at him. Handed it to a lady, who folded it up and put it in her purse. One competitor wanted to see his score and they showed him the sheet, but the official told the guy “this sheet doesn’t have the Top 4 on it.” For $10,000, I think a better explanation is needed. Again, two guys BREAK a 4-year-old record by more than 25% is like two guys running the mile in under 3 minutes on the same night.)

That is a good point anony 1:39 but like Rhonda said, I think MLE is trying to ignore the results so that people will quickly forget and go on to the next. If you are an eater, you could ask MLE for the totals and post them here. But I doubt that they will give them to you. They may just be too busy to care and are in to the next events, as usual.
